Heroes count as a unit in an army. Were you trying to add him to a 20 stack? You can't do that. Otherwise all you need to do is select the hero and right click on the army.

you are a star. thanks for the help will try that now. do you think a hero is worth replacing 1 normal unit?

First off, only heroes can join armies, not lords (generals)...you can't have 2 generals in one army in this version of TW. Only the heroes (for dwarves its runesmith, master engineer, and thane) can join armies.

Secondly, because heroes fight in battle and they because they are so GOOD, they take up a slot on the army roster...meaning they count against your 20 unit max...so if you are trying to add them to a full stack, it wont work. I suspect that's your issue.

In short yes. It is helpful to have heroes that roam but in battle heroes add a lot of killing potential to the army.

For greenskins:

Goblin Big Boss - Makes a great assassin when roaming. In battle struggles in group melee but fast and good for hitting enemy lords/heroes and running down ranged enemies.

Goblin Shaman - Has 2 standout spells. Sneaky stabbin is a great buff useful in any melee and Vindictive glare when Overcast is an extremely powerful ranged nuke just be aware it needs a direct line to target and overcasting can damage the spellcaster.
Goblin shaman also passively reduces the recharge rate of enemy spellcasters.

Ork Shaman - Again has 2 standout spells. Foot of Gork is great against high value armoured targets like elite infantry or Cavalry. Causes disruption to infantry but the blast can send infantry clear of the damage area so tends to deal more damage to cavalry.
'Ere we go cast on Black Orcs turns them into killing machines for half a minute. If you dont have Black orcs Big unz or Savage Orcs can still make good use of it.

Personally I like to have 1 spellcaster with every melee lord
For melee heroes I put them where they are most useful but with the exception of Azhag the slaughterer you'll probably find shaman lords need a melee hero to finish off enemy lords.

Scavenge is its army support ability. It's basically asking you if you want to add the haunter to your army.

The fact that these, and other similar, questions keep popping up just proves what an utter mess the UI overall is. Totally stuck in the bad parts of the 90s.
