or terrain could have hidden them.
I think legendary affects your LOS in some way (don't quote me on that) but "battle realism" mode does for sure. It limits your units LOS to a smaller range and takes away some other stuff, combined with weather effects it would reduce LOS further and that would be why you couldn't see them.
If this is for every battle then it's most likely battle realism. Check it isn't on in the game options.

had this happen with dwarf crossbow units aswell,up to the point where i think i had ordered my guys 3 times alrdy to attack the enemys shooting at them and every time theyd move a few steps,the enemy regiment fades away for a moment and then starts shooting at me again.
ive since learned when attacking enemy ranged units to give the order and then check up on them about every 5-10 seconds to ensure they are still following the order i just gave them. this is just tedious.
It was a quite laggy battle. Perhaps it is a lag thing.
