Can't start Siege despite Varghulf?

Hi.
I'm in a situation where it would be quite vital for me to take a settlement with piss-poor defenses not waiting turns to get siege equipment.
I have a Varghulf, which can break down gates. Why are both my 'Fight Battle' and 'Auto-resolve' buttons greyed out?

Why would I need (as in: can't even initiate siege) siege equipment when victory with what I have now would be certain?
If I can't work around this now, is there a Mod to remove this limitation?
As is, this really curbs my enthusiasm. The game shouldn't forbid me from "suiciding" into certain victory.

for balance reasons really.. any large monster can break down a gate.. even your lord can break down the gate but they made it so you need siege weapons to start the battle for balance reasons.. otherwises when ai siege ur cities you will never have time to get over there to stop the raze/sack/capture.. really being able to break down the gate is for when your towers fail

I think it is a mechanic to make walls slightly more valuable. The AI is already very annoying and always knows when you have towns that are not defended. At least this way, they can't attack your town with any silly stack (most garrisons are still pretty weak and the lack of a champion is a huge disadvantage now that they can solo entire units by themselves) and have to have catapults or give you a few turns.

I also see your point of view. All infantry have ladders and gates are not difficult to breach. However, I think I prefer it with the AI being unable to constantly harass my walled settlements so easily.

Fair enough, although not really something I'm a fan of.
Though that kinda makes me wonder how one is even supposed to get 'Highly Unlikely'-achievement if I have equipment by definition. Play as defender or what?

oh thats easy just have your hero blow up the wall they will leave like a giant hole in the wall taht you can choose to use but it allows you to attack wall settlements instantly its the banshee for the counts that destroy walls
