They're designed to encourage a style of play not based on land grabs.
Edit: That said, I have also found the quests for Thorgrim to be pretty obnoxious. Their focus on late game units and, in at least one case, manually walking units to very out-of-the-way locations is a real pain. I still haven't completely finished one, while AI Mannfred is running around with two of his legendary items already.
If you dropped the requirement to unlock Gyrocopters from level 5 Engineer's Guild Hall to the level 4 Engineer's Workshop, that'd still be harder to complete than most other factions early quests, but at least it'd be way better and much easier to rush early if you chose to do so.
So far I've only played on Very Hard, but the hardest 1st quest battle I can think of is Azhag's Crown, or at least that's where the bar showed the battle to be most even when I went in with 1 full stack of mostly mid-tier units.
I think ive made a major mistake wich might turn my problem upside down! Right now i saw that it was not Ungrim who was supposed to "defend" the area it was Thorgrim, what a "fail". Sorry for wasting anybodys time, and thanks Landwalker04 for making me observant so i could figure it out
The main thing i get annoyed by is the Chapters though, its way too easy to accidentally advance through them rapidly missing bonus objectives because just about everything you can do (capture, loot, raze. federate, recapture your own lost cities) advances the campaign.
Yeah, didn't know that at the time. Walked ALL the way to the south with the Vampire Counts... Lost two thirds of my army due to attrition by the time I got there on foot and had to win by kiting the whole Orc army using regenerating units and Mannfred... And then had to walk all the way back and survive... Fun times!
