Quest Battle Armies
Apologies if I'm asking a silly question, but does anyone know for sure whether you fight Quest Battles with an assigned pre-set army (like historical battles in previous TW games) or if you fight the battle with the army you take with your Legendary Lord to the battle site?

During the Greenskins campaign walkthrough video they showed that you could see the composition of the army you will be playing against in a Quest Battle, so I think the former would make more sense in gameplay terms as it allows the developers to provide uniquely challenging battles, rather than letting a player turning up with an army specifically designed to combat the quest army ie. lots of flying units to fight an army with none etc.

From what they have shown us so far it looks like you can bring your own armies to quest battles. It would probably be very annoying for a lot of players if they LL in question came to the battle with an army they liked using but then for some reason they were given a different army in the actual battle which then dissapeared afterwards. However I think they mentioned that Quest Battles are desinged in a way that means the army you face should be roughtly at the same level as what you have access to at the time.

Thanks for this. I do see that point of view as well, and as a player it is probably easier to have an army you're used to using and has some veterancy.
I just wondered because what we've seen of Black Fire Pass, in trailer and video playthrough, there is an Empire cavalry group of units in the trees away fromt he main army waiting to surprise the enemy. So if you arrived with an army without cavalry (though I don't see why you would), that element of the battle would not be the same. Or would you always get the chance to deploy some untis there?

I believe that you once the quest battle startes it plays like a regular battle with a fixed battlefield and opponant, with a slighly higher level of scripting for the AI.

Since the video they showed us for the battle of Backfire Pass was a much earlier version of the game desinged, showing only a scripted set of events, the battle will look very different in game when we have to fight it. It will probably just be a standard large Empire vs Orks battle in the same area as we were shown.

Like others have said, we'll be able to bring our own armies. In some cases, the quest will ask us to bring "2 of a certain unit," like for the "Ambush at Thundering Falls" dwarf quest chain (in this case it was gyrocopters). Other than that the majority of our army will be free for us to choose from what we have seen.
to answer you

in campaign quest battle will be with the army that your LL is leading in that moment against a scripted ia army

Thanks again for all your answers and clearing this up for me.

So do we think that there will be an out-of-campaign option to play these battles with set armies?

Maybe? Like the historical battles from previous TW games.

there two possibility in my opinion
1)like previus total war there will be only a set of historical battle with both human and ai scripted armies and map to recreate famous battle as hell fen, balck fire pass and so on

2)there will be in historical battle a section dedicated to each legendary lords with his quest chain battle and scripted armies

in my opinion i think there will be the first option
