How do you brace?
^Topic. Is this automatic? Do you just stand there, or do you have to do something specific for your units to brace ?

Guard mode. The shield icon in the ability list at the bottom of the screen.
Just have your units be standing still. They will brace automaticlly when they're charged.

Keep in mind the thinner your lines and the more ramming speed the enemy has build up before contact will determine how badly the break your formation. "Bracing" really just negates the charge damage bonus, if your lines are too thin you will still get demolished or straight up ran through. Which is disappointing/comical to see, especially the dwarfs who go flying some 30 feet from a chaos charge.

So what they go flying, they just get back up like nothing happened. Same goes for when they get hit by some wortheless magic spell, they get knocked down and then get back up again. ♥♥♥♥ this game
And remember there is some stuff you just can't brace against, it's just to big, but spear mean and some other units do get a bonus against them. I'm not sure what the 'bouns against large' actually is but it I would imagine they get some extra damage to giants and such like. Anyone know for sur ehow it works? :cs_axe:

My understanding is that it means extra damage to large units (and that this extra damage is normal, not armour-piercing, which is one of the reasons that those giant greenskin spiders are so hard to deal with).

This has the results of some testing (along with a previous post that's linked to from this one):

Thanks for the link, just gonna read it now. I'm on my second game (normal difficulty, both games I was VC) and am about 170 turns through and only had 2 fights with the greenskins, both early on and they had weak units. I made a non-aggression pack with some dwarves and I think the dwarves have kept the greens out. I've not even seen a giant spider yet but I'm looking forward to it. :redtoadstool:

They're very cool to look at, but an absolute nightmare to deal with. Lots of health, lots and lots of armour.

I remember the first time I fought Chaos Chariots. I thought they'd hurt my spearmen sure, but I figured they would also get bogged down and I could swarm them. Nope, they ran thru my braced spearmen and the crossbows behind them and barely slowed down at all. Certainly not enough for my infantry to engage them. Screw those guys. There certainly seems to be a bias in this game towards the base units, they just get wrecked by elites. You just have to be aware of it and use it to your advantage, like flying Karl Franz around and slaughtering any undefended artillery or archers.

Fighting the AI it seems like you will only get charged when it's fully to their advantage. If you put a box of spearmen around your squishies then their cavalry will ignore the whole lot and chase your cavalry or circle around. That's been my experience at least, fighting the Bretonnia and Empire factions in the Empire campaign. The only time I have seen them charge spears is when I screw up and move them so they don't have the bonus.

But would brace work if your unit is walking to face AI cavalry who never charge in front, THEN at the last seconds when they charge you order them to stop? Or do you have an interval like 1 second of standing still for bracing to work?

No, you have to have stopped moving completely. Forcing you to think about movement and where you put your stopping power. Depends what you want to stop. But you do have to be standing still.

All the shield button at the bottom does is stop your units which you want to hold a solid line, stay put in that formation, rather than chase the enemy.

The way CA explained it, was that they had removed the need to press a button to form shield wall and that your units will automatically take up the position.

Then don't play it clearly you don't like it. Why do you post move on to another game.

This is some pretty terrible community information...

Bracing is when your units are stopped
Bracing is when you hit the Guard Icon

Ok ...guard icon(shield) stops your units from chasing
Halt (hand) stops your units from moving.
Anyone actually ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ know at what point the game considers the unit to be "bracing"?

This guy explains and points go to those that said just have your unit standing still..no buttons required. Also - from watching that video and messing around in the game..the units don't have any special bracing animations they just attack when the enemy unit gets in range.

If you want to see the specific numbers for things like Bonus vs Large and Armour Piercing, just mouse-over their weapon strength stat on the card (best done in the Custom Battle section). When you mouse over it, you'll get a pop-up showing how much is normal damage, how much is armour-piercing and how much is bonus vs Large (or bonus vs Infantry, some units have that).
