I place organ guns in the frontline along with the axe and shield infantry. I put another infantry unit right behind the gun, and when the bad guys get real close, I toggle the gunners "off" the gun, pull them back, and move the unit behind in reserve up to the front to fill the gap. The gunners themselves, on one or two occasions, have used their melee skills to help save the day (but I don"t count on that).

So far, this has worked ok. With two organ guns in Grudgbearer"s army, one has earned two gold chevrons and the other three silver. Naturally, if there is high ground just behind the main line, the guns may be placed there, and I have tried getting the organ gun set at a right angle to the enemy line, but tricky stuff usually goes wrong, so I stick to the straight forward approach as described above.

another good way is setting up like this

    ------------ | | ----------- | | ------------
         inf    OG    inf   OG    inf

when the enmy get close pull back the actual guns themselves and the enemy attacking will get stuck fighting your infantry and wont be able to chase your artillery through the small gaps

I usually then swing my artillery to the sides and slaughter the enemy
__                                             __
__                                             __
     ------------     -----------      -----------
        inf            inf             inf
