Empire Mounts
This is my first Empire campaign and coming from the Dwarfs I've not had this problem with them.

My question - Do you bother with Warhorses for KF?
I'd like to skip these and gain the 2 points on something else...
... But then theres the question - Do you also ignore the Pegasus and go straight for Deathclaw for a total saving of 5 points to spend on something else?

How about the other Empire Lords?
How about Agents?

Thanks

You have to get them to get deathclaw/Griffins. Generally if your lord is with the cav keep him mounted on the warhorse. If you need to fly over walls then the Pegasus is OK but deathclaw is better. If you don't have the Pegasus or want to support infantry then unmounted is best.

You can swap depending on what you want to do for that particular battle so points aren't ever really a waste.

Edit: some heros will want to support infantry from a horse since the barded warhorse increases their armor.

I think the general best structure is to have a warrior priest on a harder warhorse with your infantry with all the leadership bonuses in the combat tree. He won't have a lot of oomph but will keep your line strong. Then you can have a captain on horse with your cavalry with all the charge bonuses and the lord on a griffin for disruption.

Thanks goumindong.
Sounds like I'm going to have a lot of fun trying that lot out!

You only need to put one point in each mount to unlock the next mount when you reach the appropriate level.

Got it, thanks boinic ape :)

Knowing off hand what mount is best for what is a little tricky because it requires game knowledge that isn't really in the stats. Flying mounts (and large mounts) reduce your melee attack sometimes by straight raw amounts but also because you're no longer as close to enemies so it's harder to physically hit them (You're also now susceptible to anti-large bonus damages).

So it's generally best to keep the mount of the units you expect to be with. Charging with the reiksguard? You want a warhorse. With the infantry? Well you probably want to be on foot (unless you need the armor from a barded horse more than the advantage of being small). Want to do something away from the cav and infantry? Griffin/Pegasus. Got to get over a wall? Warhorse is right out.

You can't skip them. You have to have at least one rank in one to get the next mount. It's advised not to upgrade a mount unless that's the mount you intend to keep that character on (meaning don't get a Barded Warhorse if you want a Pegasus for example).
