Usually my dwarfen armies have three pieces of artillery, of which at best one in every couple of armies has a single cannon.
As you've said, the only thing it's good for is "sniping" large stuff like giants or breaking down walls in sieges, aside from that I feel like the grudgethrowers outperform the cannons in most situations and are far more versatile to use.
Also Dwarfs literally inscribe grudes into the stones the Grudge-Thrower hurls which makes it so much more hardcore.
I just started playing dwarves and I only have grudge throwers at this point but wanted to get other artillery.
Side note. Also noticed quarrelers absolutely rip apart trolls, and I'd like to know if they work well against giants it other poorly armored monsters.
