Battering rams and sieging
Does anyone use battering rams other than to get battle going? I mean any unit can knock down the game in no time. I'm not even sure why we need to wait for the thing.

Same here. I use varghulfs to break gates. Ram never gets there in time.
That's another thing. Why can't we just go for broke and attack when we have a monster like that to break down the gate for us.
Even a miner can walk faster than a Ram .....

May be Ram only work for the Empire who lacks close range montrous unit ( save for Steam tank i guess )
You can siege without building if you have at least 1 long range artillery unit. I did use the battering rams but only in the start once I got a few monsters I used them instead, they would have the gate down just as the towers reached the wall which was perfect timing to take the walls and the gate at the same time.

Your towers reached the walls? I'm jealous. I only had one siege tower out of four actually make it to the walls in the only siege battle I've bothered fighting. I can't tell if it was because the siege towers were crazy weak, or the defensive towers were crazy strong, but it was ridiculous.
With the ram, u just have to wait one turn before autoresolve, i only use ram for that case!

On what difficulty? I play only on normal (cause I suck) and never lost a siege tower in at least 10 sieges.
Wondering cause I thought they are indestructible untill I hovered with the mouse over one. It had 6% damage xD

Playing on Hard I hardly ever have a siege tower survive long enough to make it to the wall.

That's just one step higher... wow.
it can be hit or miss, it really seems to depend on the way the towers are positioned...for example in my empire campaign im playing now, whenever the greenskins attack pfeildorf the towers take out all the greenskin seige towers, but when they attack wissenburg im only able to kill one before it reaches the walls.

Of course, rams are completely useless, at least against empire and dwarves. Just stick a unit of handgunners/thunderers over the gatehouse and any unit with a ram will be moving so slowly that your gunners will decimate it long before it reaches the gates. Since even basic infanty can open a gate up, and everyone has ladders too, apparently, there's really no reason to build a ram except to allow you to autoresolve next turn.

If you're actually planning to assault the walls, invest in enough towers for all your melee infantry and group them all tightly on one flank...3 towers can fit on each section of enemy walls, and if you send 10 towers against one end of the wall, only 2 or 3 of the defending towers can shoot back, so most of your seige towers will reach the walls.

The difference between Normal and Hard is pretty substantial.
With most races, I we get artillery or monsters, I barely ever build the ram. By the time it gets to the gate and destroys my troops have already been fighting on the walls for a while.

On hard difficulty I usually take 6 siege towers if I want to fight the battle (theres a mod that reduces the wait time for siege equipment, so I only need to wait 2 turns). With 6 towers, I can almost always get 3-4 towers to the walls.

I have never tried hard.. since I know I will just lose within the first 10-20 turns.

Things that work in Normal will fall flat on their face on Hard and VH.

Play on hard and I think maybe lost 1-2 towers in all my play. Are you just making 2 or just sending the towers by themselves?
