Any Guides on Unit Counters?
Hi,

I'd really like to learn to master the game, however one of my main issues I always have is to choose which units are best for my armies against my opponents (playing campaign only).

So I was wondering if there are any guides on the web that tell us which counters are best against certain units.

Thanks!

go to "custom battle" and check each catergory for each faction. Pretty much you can learn all units there ez

Hi. Pick up the book 'Carnage and Culture' by Victor Davis Hanson. It will not help you master the game. It's a good book on Western military strategy though.

Edit: I've found that skimping on building buildings gets more punch into your armies in the early phase of the match.

I always say beginnings should start with heavy inf armies, then slowly drop off the heavy infantry and replace them with units what requires more skill.

Stab em with the pointy end!
On a seroius note:

Infantry to hold the line.
Spearmen against cavalry and (most) monsters. Keep them on the flanks and in the rear to protect arty,general/hero and missile troops.

Artillery/Catapults against blobs. Don't be a newb and have 6+ in a stack. I find 2-3 to be enough.

Cavalry against arty and missile units. Also chasing down units that run away so they cannot regroup. Heavy Cavalry can attack an infantry line, light cavalry, just don't do it. Hit from the rear, chase down units, take out arty and missle only. Missile cavalry is for shoot and scoot.

Heroes, magic users, monsters are all different.

The real key is to hit the enemy from the rear.

Some units also use poison or terror. Armor piercing is a must vs, well armor!
Anti-large (usually spear) gives bonus against monsters and cavalry.

After that it gets more subtle, but that gives you the basics.

Rubbish about dont have 6+arts in an army. Everything is situational, right map right terrain, ive rekt 2 army solo just with arts in 2v2.

Even in solo mass art is extremely deadly if not responded in time.

One of the BIGGEST mistake noobs made in this game is thinking spearman counter cav. THEY. DO. NOT. They have a slight advantage over them but hard counter, hardly.

Real solid counters to cav and monster is to directly engage them in melee with quality cav or missiles.

Attack for rear, chase flank, do this do that Too much impractical suggestions here, with tips like this ull never hit top 200.

Dont be foolish into becoming a sheep following these, u hit frontline and u hit it hard. Break the front and its over. Dont get caught up chasing foolish flanks where the main is the ONLY thing that matters. Flanks r easily covered with terrain or cavs.

Best guide out there: "Booze's No Lords Custom" + "unit_testing_map_pack.pack" mod and map. Unfortunately, you need a brain to to even think that far ahead.

I guess I'll follow Mercutio tips. I really wish there was a guide like that though.

Like you could see a specific unit and then what it counters + what it is weak to.

When you select a unit and mouse over the enamy units it will tell you the threat level to that unit. So when you are in battle, you can pause the game and check your various unit type against theirs.

You have to play a lot of games to learn it. I guess someone could write a guide but considering every single unit is so different to one another it would be a pretty damn long guide. Also CA does a lot of balance changes regularly which means that guide would also have to be updated frequently.

It is a lot of work, especially once you factor magic in aswell....

Dwarves are a very good faction to learn with; their infantry largely counters everything in a frontal fight and their lack of cavalry reduces the factors you have to focus on. Vampire counts are likewise good because they lack ranged units. The two sides also compliment each other as one (dwarves) are very defensive whilst the other (vamps) are very offensive.

The other thing to consider is who you are fighting. Dwarves have no monsters or cavalry but a lot of ranged fire so don't bring halberds against them, conversely Chaos and vampire counts have little or no ranged and a lot of monsters so Halberds are ideal.

Don't listen to this guy. Literally 0% of what he is saying is correct. This isn't about how you feel, its how the game is programmed.
