Basic ranged unit questions.
Out of interest (fairly new to this and trying work things out).
When using archers, is it better to target the frontline, or other archers?
Also, with catapults or the like - what unit is it best to target? Cavalry, archers, or..?

Thank you for the help! :)

1 - Depends, if you do not have cavalry to hunt down enemy archers then you may wish to target enemy archers. Otherwise best to target enemy units, lightly armored anti-infantry units are best.

2 - Catapults or the like it is best to target whatever you deem the greatest threat in a melee.

If you cannot decide then just stick them on fire at will.

On approach I tell my ranged units to attack unshielded targets. Once the lines meet I either target large monsters/cavalry, or enemy ranged units.

If you need targets then deploy your infantry wide then contract them into squares after engaging. This creates gaps in your line through which archers can shoot.

Elavation advantage and sometimes shooting at the right flank from the left(or vis versa) may lead to a favourable arc of fire.

If you have short units like Goblins or Dwarfs you should be able to shoot straight over your own lines into the enemies if they're man sized or larger.

Depends on the archers and the various targets.
If you have archers that deal bonus vs large, then generally you are going to want them to target larger things, such as monsters and cav. If no such targets present themselves, and the unit lacks armor penetration, then target his most valuable light-armored target. This may be his archers, or it might be an elite/veteran esk frontline unit.

If you have archers that have a lot of armor penetration, you are probably going to want to target the guys frontline units with them, especially his elites.

If you have archers that are more generalist in damage output, then you are going to want to take out the most valuable lighter armored units. This might be his archers, or again it might be some lightly armored frontline units / flankers.

Usually it's best to take out unshielded damage dealer units (don't forget to use AP against armor, and non-AP against non armored). Those units can deal a lot of damage if they reach your line.

Once you've engaged, it's best to take out large units that you can safely shoot at even in melee. For example, trolls rout very quickly since they have low leadership when attacked like this.

I usually target ranged units last (I like to send cavalry against them).

Shoot Infantry damage dealer until reach our line then Shoot large unit , after large unit dead shoot enemy archer , then rolling around .
