BEGINNER / EASY STARTING FACTION
I have a mate who wants to learn this game but has no previous total war experience at all whatsoever & just yolo started playing are there any ways to help new players (besides tutorial) to learn the basic game functions/mechanics? Was thinking of doing an Empire/Bretonnia Co-op campaign with him. Any help/advice is welcome.

Cheers in advance, :steamhappy:, out.

Dwarfs is probably the easiest faction to start with.

Dwarfs, by far. Research all the Dwarf Warrior upgrades you can get and just enjoy watching tides of enemies break upon their ranks. Kind of silly, really, at least in the campaign with techs/lord buffs

Vampire is the easier by far, Dwarf might sound easy but the Orc can really give you a headache. As Vampire, build Wall to every city, spread Vampire Corruption and expand slowly, you simply cant go wrong with that.

Also, check youtube for beginner videos. there are several youtube channels that post videos on everything from UI controls to how to move and place troops. They are usually short (10 to 15 minutes maybe) and entertaining.
Of the races I've played, Dwarves is easiest, Bretonnia requires lots of micro-managing and wood elves are hardest. Haven't tried the others yet.

Yeah, dorfs. Just turtle for 30 turns and build up a stupidly efficient income machine, then conquer everything and everyone.

Dwarfs

Dwarves for sure, but the grudges can be quite irritating if you manage to get too many.

Vampire Counts have the easiest campaign, hands down. The only thing you can't really do is expand quickly without having much regard for recently conquered settlements. Conquering East and West Sylvania is extremely easy. Furthermore, the Empire factions will primarily be occupied with each other, letting you pick them off fairly easily.

Dwarfs are not the easiest because of Grudge management and because of their close proximity to the Greenskins and the Bloody Handz. While Greenskin tribes easily fight amongst each other, there are more minor Empire factions between the Empire and the Vampire Counts than there are minor Greenskin factions between the Dwarfs and Greenskins.

Bordeleaux are not as easy as the Vampire Counts because of the Wood Elves and Beastmen being nuisances. You won't be able to wipe out the Wood Elves for quite a while anyways. If they declare war on you, you're going to have a bad time.

Ok so we started out as Empire (my friend) & I chose Bretonnia (wanted to try something new) we were smashing it for about 15 turns and then started going bad...

I didn't realise how poor Bretonnia's early infantry was, I just assumed they were the average soldier type so I tried to tech up to get knights and two other types of late infantry (foot squires, grail knights, pegasus riders etc). And tried to take on the settlement to my east (who I started out at war with anyway, but got my arse kicked multiple times & had to withdraw)

So Empire are starting to gain some ground In the starting province, with one minor settlement left to capture, but I think he will hold off for now, in order to over run the guys I am at war with (he joined my war, I joined his, was a fair trade off). The Orks up north are wiped out, The Vampire Counts have ended old treaties with Empire & are about to attack from the east, and the yellow flag undead to the south declared war with me and we are planning what should we do next. Also I got one other army to join my confederation as well.

Everyone here is wrong. The easiet for a beginner is the Empire. Their units are good all-rounders and easy to understand. They don't have a major "flaw" built in like the other races do. Their building trees make sense without having to know the Warhammer lore for the most part. In battle, they play just like you would expect an army of humans to operate. There's no tricks or special strategy you have to employ. They can do almost anything.

The dwarfs have strong units, but the grudge book is a MAJOR downer for anyone, especially a new player. And it's not obvious that you HAVE to build up your cities as you slowly take them over. If the dorfs eat too many cities too fast, they'll be bankrupt every turn.

One of the easiest co-op campaigns was orcs+vampires back when there was a little mod that let you be immune to your partner's corruption. Vampires of course had a much easier campaign but required slow expansion. If you kill the dwarves east and south of Slyvania then you open up free expansion for your partner (attack the city, sack it then raze everything).

The Greenskins can easily turtle their starting area and colonize the north with an expansion army. Later on this north Orc base will be highly developed and can assist the vampires push quickly into the north. Establish a strong front before the real Chaos threat arrives and the rest of the game is a cakewalk.

Once the Orcs colonize the north they can push along the east wall straight down until they have the entire east wall captured. While all this is going on you should be able to get some goblins/orcs to join your confederation.

The vampire counts are unique in that they expand best in a circular pattern. Max out an area and push corruption to everything around you. Smash that province and claim/raze it (sack it first if you are going to raze it). Repeat this process until the north and west portions of the map are big purple blobs.

By the time the Orcs are ready to push west into the Top Knots they should have several armies. You can smash everything along the way and hop from city to city. If the vampires pushed into the border princes this can be extremely easy by way of a naval invasion.

Once the entire orc area is conqured you need to Leave an army in the province NW of the Greenskin home province and another on the southwest coast. This will allow you to curbstomp chaos/beastmen arriving later. In other words you can defend the entire orc desert with about 3 armies (one north in the mountains, one at the desert border, one at the sea tot he west) . This leaves the Green♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ to push multiple directions with several armies.

Well I'm not a beginner, although I gave up on TW games after Empire so I speak as a recent returnee as WH sounded fun and was on sale, but I can't agree. I started a couple of campaigns as the Empire as they had the most familiar troop types but gave up. A fairly familiar TW problem, the Empire's economy ticks over reasonably well for a while but drops through the floor just as huge stacks of Chaos, Varg and Skaeling descend on you, so you have to fight them off whilst only being able to field a couple of full stack armies. So I tried the dwarfs and it was a breeze, dwarves and gold have a mutual attraction and once I'd built up some regions the treasure chest/income rarely dropped below 10k/3k and now, in the endgame, stands at 600k/12k. This healthy economy allows you to field several full stack armies of elite warriors in the early game so managing grudges, greenskins etc. is pretty easy. Traveling the Underway lets you traverse the map without attrition, so the vampire and chaos lands aren't a problem either and when it comes to chaos you can literally head them off at the pass.

Lessons learnt from running the dwarves gives me ideas as to how to do better with the Empire so I'll have another go with them in due course but I think as a beginner faction the dwarves are superior.
