I like to hop over the mountains and take the unwalled dwarf settlement as Karak Norn will be occupied with Skarsnik.
Waywatchers take amber when you play as Argwylon.
Personally I just focus on taking the other Wood Elf settlements early on. I move my army away somewhere, which usually causes one of the two WE factions below me to move off their cities (usually to chase a Beastmen horde) then I swoop back in and take it from them.
Makes you pretty unpopular with the Wood Elves, but once you have 3 WE settlements to their one, they'll confederate anyways (if you want to get Orion) otherwise you can just conquer them too.
my bad, i meant glade gaurds. they are the best archers in the game regardless, and u can get the fire/poison arrows without payiing amber also.
I wouldn't tab on one of the wood elf faction's army going away long enough for you to take on their settlement early on. This changes pretty much each patch it seems, and right now, the WE armies pretty much sits there and wait the whole time (even when there's beastmen raiding their territory , leading to one of the zone one time reaching 75%+ chaos corruption really early) and muster tiers 2/3 units until they reach 20 and... nothing, just stay there. The only one that move a little is the other legendary lord, and even that is really random.
And you don't want to enter war with this one, because the quest for legendary lords give free embers that aren't tied to anything you can lose afterwards, so that's the most trustworthy source of ambers.
If yo uwant something that doesn't depend on luck, here you go, that's what I did yesterday and it worked fine, despite me doing awful mistake at the beginning as well as being very unlucky at the start as well~.
your main settlement is by far the best source of income you can have, pretty much anything else at the start sucks (except the other We settlements, and some main setlements far away that you definitely not take).
But if you muster and wait for an opportunity (regularly the dwarves and greenskin right above show some, but that's the best you'll have and that's not going to give you a lot (+ you'll have to defend it afterwards, which is quite hard at the beginning too)) then... Your economy will be like +200 when you're at full stack or almost, meaning you're in dire need of sacking but no one move, so you wait; wait, wait, and it's wasted turns. I did that before and whil you don't lose, your rate of progression is awful, and it's very frustrating.
>disband all your troops and sit in your tree, with just your legendary lord, while you move around your hero.
>send your hero either to someone who started a war against you, or that no one like (like the empire separatist nearby), or who is hated by a strong faction you want to ally with, and attack the settlements each turn. You have a high chance of success, and very low chance of critical failure (still managed to fail the first and get the 3% crit failure on the second turn btw, but whatever).
Your goal is to level up your hero to at least 5 (very easy) to get 3 points in the +rank for units, since that hero is going to join your mai narmy afterwards.
For the building, just go with the obvious +income Grape vines first, as well as the garrison (since you don't have an army, you need a deterent, and it works perfectly, keep the haunted grove, I personnaly don't think it's necessary to have any other type of military recruitment t the beginning since your main building gives you archers as well to complete it.
Then go with the building for growth (that you'll get rid off when your building can reach the level 5), and you may want to consider the public order as well depending on the difficulty, since public order in yoru settlement at first is a true pain i nthe ass in very hard/leg.
You may consider growth right away with grape vines but be aware that if you don't have a garrison you may be attacked by a stack of 20 units, which would suck a lot :p.
Anyway, level your hero and aim for the level 3 building to get you tree kin and branch wraith.
Both are your friend. Embed your hero that will provide +3 rank and start recruiting treekins. depending of if you auto reseolve or not, you may actually want to go full treekin, or a mix of treekin and archers.
As soon as it's done, attack. You have a full stack of tier 3 units that are already ranked, so most settlement will go down very quickly. So even if you go negative with the income, you massed quite a bit of money at first, and now you're massing even more with rasing settlements every times it's worth it so you don't have any worry of going bankrupt.
Your main target are the same as with the hero : anyone that other don't like, that is already at war, and as soon as you feel like you can afford the +400% upgrades, PORTS. They're the only decent source of income aroudn you outside of other WE settlements.
After that it should start rolling. Only bother allying with the main factions that will confederate others (dwarfs in particular), kick the ass of anyone those don't like, and when kicking the ass of a faction those main faction like, be quick about it to minimize the loss of reputation with them.
I usually go with the top route first for the technology, but I avoid most of the amber costing upghrade until later on (I take the +50growth asap though, and start negociating with the empire). Just don't forget to build the house of kurnous 2 turn before reaching that upgrade, and you can remove it when the upgrade is finished, you will keep the upgrade.
Filling the seat in the council is mostly useless at first, but one of the seat becomes very interesting when you get in good term witha faction directly touching you (as this opens the ability to trade with non WE faction). Others aren't a priority, do it when you're okay with the money you have.
Your goal is the oak of ages lvl 3. Don't bother trying to please the other wood elves, they automatically comply to the confederate after that.
Be careful, even after removing the units costing amber, confederating usually causes you a direct -2 amber due to their main building.
As soon as you start confederate, be sure to put vinter's barrel house in every of those settlements as well as the grape vines (usually the later is already here and upgraded to full anyway). There's no use to build vinter's barrel before confederating since it only affects the regions near you, not your region itself.
Before that, the only thing that yo ushould bother with WE is trying to get a trade agreement with the 2 close to you, this helps. If they don't want, well whatever. Also don't hesistate to walk on their territory if you really need to (usually to get rid of pesky beastmen that they don't remove themselves) even if you didn't get military access. No matter what they're going to confederate. You can even ask them the max amount of money at the same time as you confederate, so don't hesistate to do that too, that's always nice to have.
Replace some of your treekins by treemen when yo ucan afford it, those things are awesome imo.
For later on, take a look at your tactical map, the settlements with a gold mine give 500 instead of 50, so they're even better than ports. If any faction you're at war with has one, or anyone else lose one,be sure to take it as this helps quite a bit.
I personally spent the whole chaos invasion with 6 armies and a -10k income, but since I was battling all the time and that I was sitting at the beginning of that invasion on 300k+ gold, it never went bellow 80k, and by the end of the war I was at positive income with 300k + gold once again, so well.
You can really abuse the bonus in rank when recruiting with WE very early, as I was recruiting rank 9 treemen and dragons right with my first recruitment of those units, so that's pretty effective.
Also, be sure to have branchwraith deployed on your major settlements when you confederate. WE already have a hard time in their main settlements to not go rebelion, so with the -8 you're goingto get it for sure.
You're still going to get rebelions tho. Not too much on minor settlements (especially when you have at least 2 in the province), since each of those minor settlements provide a +6 (so that's +12 /+18 if you have the whole province) and that you can afford to remove taxes if it really goes wrong since those settlements don't really provide any income worth mentionning.
So be sure to have the garrison upgraded on every settlements, end even like that, this may turn a bit crazy so be ready to stop what you're doing and help the garrison if this goes bad.
Losing it to a rebelion isn't the end (it happened to me once yesterday, I overestimated my garrison there) but it reset your building apparently, so that's something that will cost you a lot of turns to repair.
Here we go,
Edit: that ended up being far longer than I thought it would be.
Tdlr; sit and wait with your lord until you get tier 3 asap, level up your hero on the campaign line, then go treekin. Any unit kept before that is just a waste of money for you since your income is so low already.
Eagles can be sent against artillery and archers, dragons can charge their melee units from the back, hawk archers can do both but they lose against fell bats and other air forces, so keep them safe.
Most trouble I have is against missile cavalry and armoured. Against those I guess use glade guards starfire against armoured units and eagles, dragons or wild riders against missile cavalry
