Karl Franz on foot

Why does Karl Franz start out without any kind of mount? It's pretty stupid for a Lord to be going into battle on foot, let alone the Emperor himself. Is there a way to put him on a horse?

He can get a horse, a pegasus, and Deathclaw.

I don't know the specific level but I know I got Karl a horse before I even fought 5 battles.

Just look at his skill tree tab, all the information you need on your mounts is there.

I hear some people think Mounts are a bad idea anyway (they lower certain stats like attack and damage, even armor, and make you vulnerable to anti-cavalry units like the ever-present spearmen and the like) - I'm not yet at a point where I can say if they are or aren't, but if you hover over the option of getting a Mount when you level up, you'll see some painful stat reductions marked in red as well.

Those aren't always true. If you hover over it, you see the original stats of the character, with the changes of the mount. Changes of items and skills then don't show up, but if you get the mount, these changes are still present.

Specifically they're a set of yellow skills along the top of the screen, just to the right of his Quests.

Waving the necro wand on this thread ... I just started playing this game today and the very first thing I did on Level Up was pick the Horse option, but ... he's still going around on foot! I checked the 'horse pocket' but I don't see my horse in there. Dunno what's up.

Guess I'll just wait til he hits level 9 and try the Imperial Pegasus ... doesn't make much sense upgrading the Warhorse he doesn't have to an imaginary Barded Warhorse and wasting another point ....

You have to equip it as a mount on his skills/gear page.

That's the problem, I picked the skill right out the gate and it pretends he has no mount on the equip page.

Have you got a pic? You manually need to equip the mount yourself after unlocking it on the skills page. It's not automatic.
