Medals, Game Slots, & Endings
Based on other threads in the forum, I understand that Medals are one-use only. They do not permanently unlock abilities, they just improve your next character when you use them.

1. Are medals:

A. Attached to the game slot. You can only earn each of the medals once and you can use them each once but you can choose when to use them and decide to save them for a future game.

B. Attached to the particular game so that your next game gets the benefit. You cannot save the medals so if you don't use them, you lose them. However, each game allows you to earn the medals all over again (even the same ones from prior games) since they get applied just to the next game.

C. Something else.

2. There has been talk about backing up save files. How does that affect medal status, if at all?

3. When you die or get a bad ending, what happens? Do you have to start a new game? Do you need to run through most of the game just to get the bad endings? Or can you just reload a backed up save game to see (and unlock) the bad endings?

Thanks!

Based on my 6 playthrough so may need correction.

1. Medals are earnt on every playthrough and accumalate until spent when you choose upgrade on the next playthough but only for that save slot profile. I played through 4 times on the same profile and never thought to click upgrade - when i finally did i had 28 medals to spend - so in summary they are not lost as long as you keep playing in the same profile. Once spent yes they are gone but effects are permanent such as unlocking Bodyguard etc.

2. No idea sorry.

3. You simply get to try over again from the start (with option to spend medals and use uprgades as above) - there is no reload a certain day once you get an ending - good or bad its back to day 1 and off you go. Bad endings are easy to get if thats what you really want - Fail missions, ignore camp threats (no guards etc)
Medals do permanently increase your characters stats, not just for the next playthrough, any medals you spend on the four different options will stay in those options for however many playthroughs in the same save slot.

Thanks for the responses.

1. Oh, so when you spend medals, the effects (increased character stat, unlocked occupation) do remain in effect for all future playthroughs in that same slot?

In a previous thread:

http://steamcommunity.com/app/363930/discussions/0/282992646978865894/

that seemed to imply otherwise.

Also, the developer commented in:

http://steamcommunity.com/app/363930/discussions/0/350540780279152741/

That is technically about earning medals again in the same slot, but when I first read it, it seemed to imply that you would constantly need more medals.

2. If you backup a save file, does this eliminate any medals/achievements earned since? Or does the save slot independently store medal/achievement info outside of the save file.

So you can test a failed ending, reload to an earlier save and then continue to get credit for unlocking that failed ending?

Or do you need to start a new game after the failed ending and continue from there?

3. For most of the achievements when you need to do X times, do you need to do this in a single game or is it cumulatively throughout games for a given slot?

In case any body is searching for answers here in 2020. I just tested the Medals and Upgrades.

- I started my first play thorugh in Profile 1

- When I died I had 6 Medals

- I paid 1 medal into Medical

- I then played a second play through and died ASAP

- After dying I went back into the Ugrades and found that I still had 5 medals, and medical was still up 1 level.

- I checked Profile 2 as I have not started a game in that, no medals and no upgrades.

In conclusion I feel it is safe to say that Medals and Upgrade levels carry over playthough in their own respective Profiles.
