ROTK 13 Fan Made Custom Event Chain / Scenario: Gongsun Zan Hypothetical Rise to Power
Hello everyone. Not sure if this is allowed here, but I made this and wanted to share it with the community. I’ve always kind of been curious about what might have happened if Gongsun Zan won against Yuan Shao at the battle of Jieqiao. The event editor in ROTK 13 has allowed me to put this idea into a playable custom scenario formed by a 11 event chain spanning from 191 to 208. I have decided to try my best to make this scenario available to the ROTK13 community as a download, as I think it develops in an interesting way. It also should be noted that the “scenario” is generated by these events, and that there will not be a new scenario on the screen where you go to start a new game. This is a hypothetical history where Gongsun Zan drastically reshapes China during the Three Kingdoms period as compared to how it progresses in the novel / history. Hope you all enjoy.

----------

Here is the link to the download for the files related to the event:

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/an3fk0j0oxg03ha/AACTePCqFRWaBSSjtSldwbGea?dl=0

The only files in the folder that are required to make the event work are in the EN_TEVENT folder. There are some other files in the folder that are optional. A description of these files, installation instructions, and scenario details are all discussed in sections below.

----------

Included in the folder is also the editdata file for a rebalance of officers that I did for the scenario (mainly Gongsun Zan family and officers), and also the game in general. If you are not interested in the total rebalance, but do desire to still buff Gongsun Zan’s force officers as I did, here are the buffs that I applied to Gongsun Zan officers:

Gongsun Zan: Lea 86 War 89 Int 71 Pol 53

Gongsun Yue, Fan, and Xu: +5 to all stats. Also increased cavalry and bow aptitude for all Gongsun family members.

Tian Yu: +4 to all stats

Tian Kai: +5 to all stats

Yan Gang: +3 all stats

Guan Jing: +3 all stats

----------

I also have included the files for additional officers from the novel and history that will appear as created officers. However, these additional officers are not required for the events to function and the scenario to play through, so this is an optional inclusion. An overwhelming majority of the officers included were obtained from a download in this forum thread:

https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/koeiwarriors/missing-historical-officers-for-rotk-xiii-t24892.html#new

However, I have rebalanced many of the officers that were included in the original download. I have also been gradually adding more officers to the game / file and building on that download with officers that I had previously created from officer information on the kongming.net and also the encyclopedia in Dynasty Warriors 8XL. In the events that I have available to download, I have also included 1 event (PositionNewOfficer1) that I intend to make more of, that should place officers into their respective forces at the start of the game. As of right now, I only have 1 of these events set up, which properly assigns 40 officers to some of the minor forces, but considering that there is 250+ officers created, more of these events will be needed, which I may make more of in the future.

----------

*Installation instructions:*

On your computer look for the folder containing your ROTK13 save datas. On my computer it installed creating a folder called KoeiTecmo. Then go through these steps for each corresponding set of download files.

Events (required):

KoeiTecmo > San13 > EN_TEVENT

Then copy the contents from the downloaded EN_TEVENT folder into the EN_TEVENT folder that this guided you to. You should now be able to read these events to your custom event list in your ROTK13 game. Then activate these events in the Restrict Events tab.

Additional officers + officer rebalance (optional):

KoeiTecmo > San13 > EN_SAVEDATA

I recommend backing up your editdata.s13 and editdata_pk.s13 files somewhere else on your computer before doing this. After backing up, take the editdata.s13 and editdata_pk.s13 files that you downloaded, and save them into that folder, replacing the files of the same name already in there. I believe this method can preserve relationships and familial ties of custom officers, while the alternative method that I provide below may cause those ties to be lost.

Additional officers without rebalance (optional alternative):

KoeiTecmo > San13 > EN_TPERSON

Then copy the contents from the downloaded EN_TPERSON folder into the EN_TPERSON folder that this guided you to. You should now be able to read these officers into your custom officer list in your ROTK13 game.

----------

These events can be triggered in the following start dates / scenarios:

190 – Requires Historical events and behaviors turned on

195 – Can be played with historical on, or played with fictional on

251 (Rise of Heroes) – Played on fictional, and all events will trigger in a row after the very first date change in the game.

----------

I made the conditions for triggering the events relatively simple as to avoid easy event chain breaks. These triggers include:

The date must be after the original launch date of the event.

Gongsun Zan, Liu Bei, and Cao Cao must be the ruler of their own forces up until the final event in 208.

Lu Bu must be the ruler of his own force from the time of his forces foundation until the event in 204. I do recommend letting him live until the event chain finishes in 208 though.

An event in 208 will require Gongsun Zan to control Changan.

Yuan Shang and Yuan Xi will have to remain alive until an event in 193.

----------

*Things to be aware of:*

---------

*Officers that you cannot play without the events causing an early game over:*

Li Jue, Qu Yi, Yuan Shang, Yuan Xi

*Officers that you cannot play without an early game over unless you have a successor for your character such as a child early on:*

Yuan Shao, Yuan Shu, Liu Biao, Ma Xiu, Gongsun Yue, Zhang Miao (I think), Zhang Ji, Liu Yu

Ma Teng is a special case where there is a decision in an event in 207 that may lead to his death.

*Officers that your experience playing as will differ greatly from what one may expect upon starting the game:*

Zhang Yang, Han Fu, Kong Rong, Kong Zhou

----------

It should also be noted that in many cases, the events force certain cities to become part of a certain forces land. This is an issue in most of the game in the central plains and northwestern China areas. So don’t take control on these cities for granted. There is also an event in 207 that will shape the southern area of Jing province (Lingling, Guiyang, Changsha, Wuling), and also Jing province itself. However, the way that I scripted the events should allow you the freedom to conquer and take forces over as you wish so long you don’t eliminate Gongsun Zan, Liu Bei, Cao Cao, or Lu Bu, but don’t be surprised if event scripting eventually steals from cities from you in these areas. Eliminating forces may also affect the officer rosters of those 4 forces later on.

*Areas that are safe to start created forces in:*

Everywhere that is not in the central plains or northwest China, along with some caution in Jing province. Also, Runan and Zhongshan have been left free of events dictating who controls them.

---------

There are also many scripted changes in what force specific officers are in as an attempt to balance the roster of forces at the end of the event chain, and also to make the officer rosters align with the story of the events. However, most of the time these officer movements are tied to force assimilations, but there are events in 207 and 208 that will move officers around for other reasons.

----------

*Problems that you may encounter:*

Warning: This section will feature spoilers for the event chain

----------

Problem 1: In the event messages and scripting, Yuan Shang becomes the ruler of Yuan Shao’s forces. However, I was unable to get the change ruler function in the event editor to work no matter what I did with Yuan Shao, so the ruler after Yuan Shao’s death defaults to Yuan Tan. There isn’t really anything that I can do about it. Also, ideally I would have just recreated the civil war between Yuan Shang and Yuan Tan, but the event editor provides no way of creating new forces, so this wasn’t achievable. So I ask that you pretend as if the civil war between the two is occurring, and that Yuan Shang is the ruler of Yuan Shao’s force.

Problem 2: Difficulties with working around the AI.

In general, in my test runs I noticed that Cao Cao’s force for whatever reason doesn’t like fighting with the other forces in the central plains, which kind of messes with the balance of the area. He also seems to ally Lu Bu very frequently under the conditions created by the event, which is surprising considering their historical conflict.

On historical even though Gongsun Zan is expanding through the event chain, the historical AI will pretty much refuse to expand beyond the areas surrounding Beiping. But it will still defend itself. So unfortunately it’s not the most interactive. Also, Lu Bu tends to dominate the central plains due to Gongsun Zan’s lack of interference.

On fictional Gongsun Zan will interact and try to expand, which yields a better experience. However, Ma Teng can also expand very aggressively and cause problems for Cao Cao. Lu Bu also tends to experience difficulty due to additional pressure by Sun Ce, but Sun Ce may also have times where he just collapses for whatever reason.

Problem 3: Alliance duration through the event editor.

The event editor only allows you to form alliances as long as 12 months making it hard to maintain the peace between forces that should be allied. Theoretically Liu Biao and Cao Cao should be allied from 202 until 207, then Gongsun Zan and Liu Bei should be allied from 193 until 208. However, I didn’t write enough events to maintain these alliances naturally. I could add filler events to renew the alliances, but I tried to avoid unnecessary filler events. You could still extend these alliances yourself through the in game editor if you’d like though.

Problem 4: Rise of Heroes and troop counts.

The event chain still very much works in Rise of Heroes (ROH), and allows you to play the final state of the forces from the start of the game. However, in historical scenarios, in an attempt to prevent forces essential to the event chain from getting overrun and destroyed and breaking the event chain, I had to script some events to add additional troops to some cities, or remove them from others. This seems to work alright for balance purposes when playing through the events over time, but since they all trigger at the same time at the start in ROH, it can throw balance in the scenario off as some cities and forces get to start with many more troops than they should. I advise using the in-game editor to just adjust the troop numbers back down. Also, I never made an event to give the Sun clan its land that it should have in the final state of the scenario, as in the historical starts they naturally conquer this land themselves, and didn’t really feel worth scripting, but in ROH this will cause Sun to start with just 1 city while other forces are full fleged. However, making an event to give them the necessary land (Lujiang, Yuzhang, Jianye, Huiji, Wu) should be pretty simple, and can be easily achieved yourself. If there is enough demand for me to make the event, I will make it and add it to the download though. ROH will also cause changes to the final rosters of officers on some forces, with Gongsun Zan tending to have a slightly weaker force, and Liu Bei having a much stronger force.

Thanks for sharing, and afaik it is allowed here. In fact, the most of the mods that have been made for this game seem to have been shared among the English-speaking community here.

This sounds interesting and I'll give it a try. It's cool that you came up with something like this and decided to share it.
