I see. It's just that rulers can get the fancy ones too, yet they're technically the highest rank. Unless it's to do with the Emperor giving ranks in the rulers case.
I'm assuming the ones where certain characters gain facial hair in their portraits must be to do with ageing.
Edit: Nevermind, turns out I'm just unobservant. Looked through the portraits and most of them are fairly significant changes, guess I assumed his would be too. Turns out Zhao Yun's is more subtle and I just overlooked it. His tassle gets blue and his armour more detailed, where as most others get much fancier cloths.
