How is this compared to XI?
I didnt play XII but adored XI. If anyone played XI can you weigh in?

I switched because I had played XI into the ground but overall it's a better game. I often liken XI to III and XIII to IV because I played the hell out of III and when I moved on to IV, I thought it had great ideas, but they were executed poorly, so the game was less enjoyable than it could have been. Same deal with XIII.

Plus the PUK is essentially a required purchase, the base version of XIII is horrible.

It's almost nothing like XI, this is more of a successor to X.
The game has a lot issues (and the Expansion Pack is pretty necessary to enjoy it) but I liked what they were going for with the RPG experience and, overall, I enjoyed XIII more than XI.
You didn't miss anything by skipping XII by the way.

This is the first officer game I've played in the series - I bought VIII at a discount but could never figure out how to play it. It's completely different to the ruler strategy game which II, III, IV, IX and XI (the others I've played) are. There's more focus on character relationships, and it has a lot of game elements in there which you can't possibly see in a single playthrough - I'm on my second game as an Advisor for Yuan Shao (having gotten thrashed in the first one while learning the game). After this I want to try as a Patriot, then as a merchant, and later on play as a ruler and see what extra commands I get.

I can't really compare it to XI at all, actually - it's like two different genres, just with the same people and a similar map. I loved XI, and if I hadn't run into that Windows 10 error which prevents me from playing my old DVD-copy protected games, I would probably never have bought XIII and would still be playing XI now. Nevertheless, I have no regrets, and I've forgotten what it's like to be so addicted to a game that I cannot sleep. If you love the RTK franchise because of the setting, characters and the, dare I say it, romantic (not in a pure boy-girl way) part of things then I suppose you will like XIII as well. If you loved RTK XI because of the engine and the gameplay, then you may not be ready for what you get, but the same can pretty much be said of any RTK game from Koei anyway. I've had to unlearn so many things to play each successive iteration (I think only the move from III to IV was straightforward - the rest all utterly confused me, although XI was beautifully easy to get the hang of), so playing XIII hasn't really been too difficult. The tutorials aren't great, but the Youtube videos are pretty good, and we always have the helpful community on this forum.

As mentioned, comparing XIII and XI is like comparing apples and oranges. Try X for yourself and if you like it, XIII is for you. XI doesn't allow you to play anything other than the entire force (which admittedly is pretty mandatory if you are not playing on Cao Cao's side in scenarios set after Guandu).

If you like controlling everything by yourself, XI is more to your taste. But, if you want to play as a character roaming around China, or to experience pitting a female character against the world, XIII is for you.

Keep in mind that hating X doesn't mean that you won't like XIII (me for example :D). XI and XIII are my best RoTK, and I hate X

XIII expanded so much on X, and well, it's been more than 10 years. So, I'll cut X some slack.

Its not worth the $70-$95. Wait for a big sale if you plan to buy it.

Xi was the best in my mind, but the lack of a english PUK made me stop playing it, If XIII was patched to fix the tech issues or atleast give it 60fps so it feels abit smoother it would be a great RPG where in Xi was more of a tactics game.

That sounds very cool.
