Only interation with side-view?
So, I used RPGmaker 2000 way back when and then recently got VXace. Both of those have that awful one-sided battle view instead of 2003's side-view. My question is does anyone know why the hell they made it the default in 2003 but then went back to the one-sided view in subsequent releases?

Most games that I've seen come out of this kind of software almost instantly ditch the default view for a side view one. Why did they put in that feature and then take it back out again?

Simplicity, less art and the stock battle system (for all the other RPG Makers) makes it more easy to expand upon it.

It's supposed to be basic as you're supposed to change it. If that makes sense. They chose something minimal for you to modify, build off of or completely scrap.

Also Dragon Quest.

I've used front view battle system in 2k3, you only have to make invisible the characters or make front basic sprites and put them below the screen,

The primary market for the RPG Maker series was, and still is, Japan. And as I've heard, front-view battle systems are prefered over side-view in Japan.

That game looks like fun!

Most 2k3 games don't use the side-view default battle system at all, and 2k was and is still fairly popular, not needing a side-view default battle system to being so. Why? Well, the system is kinda unflexible as it is just a carbon copy of FFIV-VI battle system, so it isn't that fashionable, and it requires a lot of resource creation to make it work as the RTP is kinda bland for side-view and default animations weren't too useful either.

After the non-so-great success of 2k3 it looks like Enterbrain seen it wasn't a needed feature after all to put work on, so they ditched it. They were able to shut down the dissapointment of some fans with the powerful tool of RGSS to make it happen if you really wish so anyway.

On average you can say that XP was an attempt to ditch as many non-popular features as possible to make a quick and easy release, while answering any dissapointment with RGSS. VX was kinda in the same boat, but the sheer ammount of features removed was a way too much to compensate them with RGSS2 and some novelty, so they had to actually make VX Ace happen.

My opinion, of course.
