Have you thought about tinkering your Battlecharset sprites and positionning them manually on the stage to show them on the bottom of the screen ? I'm sure this can turn out better than one can expect ;)
What you want to do is to turn off that battle animations are fliped between hero and monster
Next up you make battle sprites that are either the backs / heads of your heroes or just blanks to represent the heros in battle. Next up you go to the battle layout and place them where you want them.
Third step is to import/make monster sprites facing the screen. Mush like the battle sprites you will have to line them up side by side in the tropp/army/monster groups tab.
And then you are done.
I kinda remember Xp having this system. And I think VX gave you a choice?
As for placing them manually i personally wouldn't WANT the sprites of my characters on the screen. i don't know i find it alot nicer looking otherwise.
