The Ending and other Story-Related Questions [Warning: Heavy Spoilers, do not read before having finished the game]
So, after having played through the game. I still only have a very rough understanding of the story. So here's some questions, in the hope that some others can answer them:

Who or what are Jill and the other twelve patients? And what exactly is Sylvio supposed to be?

Judging by the huge apparatus that covered Jill's head, I initially thought they somehow are "harvested" to create the red fog, yet the fog seemingly existed before the thirteen were "hospitalized". At the same time, one of the spirits (Susi?) warns you not to go down the hatch because Sylvio waits there, but all you find down the hatch is July. Do the patients serve as some kind of "shell" for an uber-spirit called Sylvio? And why does Jill turn into a humanoid apparation once you free her from the machine?

Also, do th portraits you can smash for ammo ingame have any particular significance? You can find them in various places (with three or four alone in the last level), so I had the impression they were somehow story-related.

I didn't get it either. Enjoyed the game though.

I figured that sylvio was the "blood of the mist" that was mentioned a couple of times. As far as I can figure out Sylvio was some sort of nature spirit/demon/god that was unearthed during an earthquake/landslide its essence was being bottled and used as a pestiside.

There seems to have been some other sort of disaster on the day of a parade which I beleve sylvio used to attack the 12 and drove them insane. The 12 then attacked other guests before being captured.

As for the portriats I beleive them to be the owner of the pestiside company, bobbie's father.

All this is simply conjecture but is my best attempt at interpreting what I believe to be an intentionally unclear story.
