How to unlock all characters?

I have the bee and ninja boss characters but don't know where to go from there.

To unlock more characters play the crane game in the shop.

so do we have to farm/grind for coins to get characters on the machine

Yes. It really doesn't take that long at all. Just play Arcade mode on easy as shield moose and you get 150, meaning 6 tries on the crane game and it only takes like two-four minutes tops.
Or you can play the game online and earn coins that way. Also, refresh the crane game until you see the heads of characters unless you want the items.
