Bug thread!
Hello you awesome!

Can't progress through the Killmonday logo or having a black/white screen on startup or does the game freeze on a game screen? Here's a solution you can try!

You need to change the VertexBufferMethod to either 0 or 2 in the options.ini that comes with the game folder. Also might need to put AlternateSyncMethod to 1!

How to find the options file:
1. Right click Fran Bow in your library and choose properties
2. Go to LOCAL FILES and click BROWSE LOCAL FILES
3. Find the file called "options.ini" and open it
4. Here are some changes you can try to make the game run:

Change the VertexBufferMethod line to read like this:

VertexBufferMethod=2

then save the file, and try to play the game again.

If it still doesn't play, then change that same line to this:

VertexBufferMethod=0

then save the file again, and try to play the game.

If the game still doesn't play, then there are other parameters you can change. Please refer to this post on Steam: http://steamcommunity.com/app/362680/discussions/0/350540973990402741/ (fourth bullet point down) for the complete instructions.

A reminder, once the game is running, you can change the resolution of the game screens, as well as playing the game in Full-screen mode or in a Window, and with Shaders on or off and VSync on or off. Once you change any of these parameters, you can change these settings back to the game default by pressing the F10 key when you are either on the Options Menu or the Main Menu.

Please also look at this thread (called "Windows Gamers, Troubleshooting Tips if the Fran Bow Game Doesn't Play") here: http://steamcommunity.com/app/362680/discussions/0/350540973990402741/ for other troubleshooting steps to try if changing the "options.ini" file parameters don't allow you to play the Fran Bow game.

Хелло Tanya,

    C:\Program Files (X86)\Steam\Steamapps\Common\

    Hello Tanya,

This response was written in English and translated back into Russian using Google Translate. Thank you for your post, it seems to me that you're having trouble getting the Fran Bow game to run. I hope that this translation is of high enough quality to help you, but I'm concerned that it may not be, for which I am sorry. While the Fran Bow game itself has been translated into Russian, because we are a small company, we are not able to provide game support in Russian in the same high quality as the game translation itself, and I hope that you understand. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try to get Fran Bow running on your computer:

    • Reboot your computer which sometimes clears up memory problems that might keep the game from running, especially just after you've installed the game. If you've already rebooted your computer since installing the game, go on to the next step.

    • Verify the integrity of the game's cache. This ensures that you have all the files required to play the game and that none of them were corrupted during the game installation process. Here is a link to instructions for doing this (on the Steam Website): https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=2037-QEUH-3335. Then try to play Fran Bow again.

    • If the game still won't start up, then you can modify the parameters of the "options.ini" file present in the Fran Bow game folder. This can fix game opening issues; however, you have to perform "trial and error" with the 11 different possible combinations in the "options.ini" file until you find one where the game plays properly. First, ensure that you have "Hide File Extensions for Known File Types unchecked in Folder Options--see this link for instructions on how to do this: http://kb.winzip.com/kb/entry/26/.

Then, open the "options.ini" file in the Fran Bow game folder with a text editor (like notepad) and read the instructions at the bottom of this file. I recommend that you first change the VertexBufferMethod from 1 to 2, save the file, and try to play the game again. If that doesn't work, then change the VertexBufferMethod from 2 to 0, save the file and try to play again. If those changes don't allow you to launch the game, you can also continue changing VertexBufferMethod, AlternateSyncMethod, and CreateTexturesOnDemand until all possible combinations have been tried.

      [edit 2023-02-01]
This is a very old post and this guidance (shown below in "striked text" below)no longer applies. Instead, try this file on my Google Drive: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1bwR-KgcKEVjYRGJBAgF8c-G8ohoGCUlm/view?usp=share_link.

Once you've downloaded the file copy it to your Fran Bow game files location. The default location is

      C:\Program Files (X86)\Steam\Steamapps\Common\Fran Bow\

and overwrite the "options.ini" file already there (or rename it instead).

Then try to play the game again to see if the game screen now appears. If that doesn't help, then post in this thread and I'll try to help further.
      [end_edit_2023-02-01]

If you want to be sure you have tried all possible combinations, you can download all the possible combinations already written into the "options.ini" file at the link in the next paragraph below. There are a total of eleven different permutations of the parameters that can be changed. Unfortunately, I can't predict which of the permutations will allow you to play the game. You'll need to download the eleven "options.ini" files (named "options.ini.01" through "options.ini.11") and copy them to the Fran Bow game directory, rename the original "options.ini" file, then for each options.ini.## file, rename it to options.ini and try to play the game until the game launches. If it does still not launch, then delete the options.ini file and rename the next options.ini.## file to options.ini and try again.

The files are all located here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B-V4ozvekwP4UnExQlBRRXZYM3M. This will take you to a google drive location. Left click on each file in turn and then left-click on the Download button to download the file. Once the files have been downloaded, copy them to your Fran Bow folder (default is c:\program files\steam\steamapps\common\Fran Bow on Steam). After you have copied all the files, then right click on the original options.ini file, select Rename from the menu which appears and rename it to "options.ini.original". Then rename the file "options.ini.01" to "options.ini" and try to play the game. If the game still freezes, then right-click on the "options.ini" file, select Delete from the resulting menu, to delete that file. Then rename the "options.ini.02" file to "options.ini" and try to play again. And so on until the game no longer crashes.

I hope that this post has been helpful. Please post again if you have any questions and I will try to answer.

Hello anime_for_life,

I'm sorry that you're having trouble getting Fran Bow to run. I don't see the game in your Steam Library, so can you tell me on which store you purchased the game, and also which platform (Windows, Mac, or Linux) you're playing the game on? This will help me to figure out how to best give you troubleshooting tips.

Thanks for your help, anime_for_life. I hope to help you get Fran Bow running on your computer.

Hello Eiskaffee,

I'm sorry that you didn't get the Feeding the Robot Rabbit achievement in the Fran Bow game. I did just test it using my Windows machine and did successfully unlock this achievement.

You didn't say what you did hoping to unlock this achievement. For example, how many carrots did you feed to the Robot Rabbit?

The Feeding the Robot Rabbit unlocks after giving the Robot Rabbit his third carrot.

I hope this helps.
Hello there, I just downloaded the demo version and when I try to open the game it only appears a black screen with a music playing, when I press ESC the music stops for less than a second and starts again, but nothing shows up on the screen (like the comment from a girl up there). Sometimes when I try to open the game again the menu page appears but the mouse just don't move! Please, how can I fix it?

Hello boo_is_a_penguin,

Sorry that you're having trouble playing the Fran Bow demo. You didn't say what platform you're trying to play the demo on (Windows, Mac, or Linux), nor did you say what troubleshooting steps you tried to fix the problem. Here are some general troubleshooting things to try:

  • Reboot your computer. This can clear up temporary memory problems that occur sometimes--especially just after downloading the game. If you've already done this since you've installed the demo, there isn't any need to do it again. Just go on to the next troubleshooting step.

  • If the demo still doesn't run for you, then verify the integrity of the game cache on Steam. The demo has only one file; however, this verification step will ensure that this file is not corrupt which could also cause the issue you are describing. Here's a link to the instructions for this verification: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=2037-QEUH-3335&l=english. Then try to play the demo again. If it still doesn't run, go on to the next troubleshooting step.

  • You didn't give any information about what the make/model of your computer is and its specs. For example, do you have more than one video card installed in your computer? If you DO have more than one video card in your computer, then you'll need to make sure you've using the more powerful one to run the Fran Bow demo. Here are some instructions on the web for making sure the more powerful video card is being used to run the Fran Bow demo (if it's a NVidia card): http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2328409/switch-nvidia-intel-graphic-cards-g56-asus-laptop.html (Scroll down a bit at that link to find the instructions), which are summarized below as well:

    1. Right Click on Desktop , select NVidia control panel

    2. Select manage 3D settings / program settings tab

    3. Under the dropdown (1) for Programs select add, then browse, and navigate to the Fran Bow game folder in steam--default is c:\program files (x86)\Steam\Steamapps\Common\Fran Bow Demo and left double-click on the "Fran Bow Demo.exe" file in that folder (it may only show as "Fran Bow Demo" if you have "Hide File Extensions for Known File Types" set to ON, the windows default)

    4. Next, find the dropdown for the Video Card to use and select the NVidia card (not the integrated video card). Then try to play the demo again.

If the demo still doesn't run, please post again and tell me what processor you have in your computer, the amount of RAM you have, and the make and model of your video card and the amount of video ram it has.

I hope something here will allow you to play the demo, boo_is_a_penguin.

Hey boo_is_a_penguin,

Thanks for posting again. Your description of your computer is helpful. Thanks for posting what kind of graphics card you have, what operating system you're using, and how much total RAM you have in your computer.

But I am still not sure if you did what I asked you to do. I know that you said "It didn't work", and I believe you meant the demo still didn't start up, but what exactly did you do to try to make it work?

Did you:

  • Reboot your computer and they try to play the demo, and it didn't work?

  • Verify the integrity of the game's cache? Did it say "All files verified successfully" or did it say "1 file failed to validate and will be reaquired"?

  • Did you right click on your desktop and see a menu pick for NVidia Control Panel? I know you said you have Intel HD Graphics 2133 MB, but it's still not clear to me if you have two video cards in your laptop or not. Probably you DO NOT have a NVidia graphics card in your computer since you only have 4 GB of RAM total in your laptop, but I just want to be sure.

All of the answers to those questions are basically background info now though and wouldn't change the suggestions I now give you. The frozen screen issue you described is due to the game wanting more RAM than is available. So here are some tips you can try to free up memory.

  1. Try to start up the demo and when any screen pops up (even if it's frozen), hold down the ALT key on your keyboard and then press the ENTER key. Do it only once though because it is a toggle between full-screen and windowed-mode. The demo ALWAYS starts up in full-screen mode and this cannot be changed (the full game allows you to specify whether to start the game up in full-screen or windowed mode). You may not see any change in the game screen if the game is truly frozen, but if the game can be toggled to windowed mode, it may play.

  2. If the demo still doesn't play, you can use the System Configuration tool to start up Windows with as few programs running automatically as possible. To start up the System Configuration tool, hold down the Windows key on your keyboard and press the "R" key to call up the Run popup window. Type msconfig.exe and press the ENTER key to start up this tool. Then, left click on the Startup Tab at the top of the tool, and uncheck any items you care to not have start up when you boot your computer. If you have any items there for Audio, leave those checked. Click OK, then Restart to restart your computer with the revised configuration. This may free up some memory allowing you to play the demo. Then try to play again. When you're finished playing, to return to "normal" configuration, open the System Configuration tool again, and on the General tab, click the Normal Startup radio button, then click on the OK button, followed by the Restart button.

Please note that while this process is, in general, safe, and completely reversible, I cannot be responsible for any trouble caused by your trying this troubleshooting step.

  3. If the demo still won't play, you can try to play the demo outside of the Steam client software. This may free up a bit of memory allowing you to play. To do this, logout of Steam and be sure that the steam client software is completely closed (no Steam icon in the taskbar in the lower right corner of the screen). Then in Windows explorer, navigate to the location of the Fran Bow Demo executable (by default, this is c:\program files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Fran Bow Demo\Fran Bow Demo.exe--you may only see "Fran Bow Demo" at the end if Hide File Extensions for Known File Types is ON, the Windows default and double click on that file to start up the demo.

  4. My last suggestion is to consider updating the drivers of your Intel video card. Here's a link to the Intel Video Drivers site for the latest video driver: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/.

Please note that again, I cannot be responsible should you have trouble installing an updated video driver.

If you're feeling a bit overwhelmed, boo_is_a_penguin, I don't blame you. There is a lot of reading here, and the unfortunate thing is, I can't be sure that doing this stuff will allow you to play the Fran Bow demo. It appears that your computer MAY be right at the minimum specs for playing this demo. Please be aware that you may also have difficulty playing the full game on this computer because it requires even more processing and video card power.

I'm sorry that it has been difficult for you to play the demo on your computer. I'd really like for you to play it if at all possible, and I hope that some troubleshooting step here will allow you to play. Feel free to post again if you have any questions or want more explanation. I wish you luck.

Hello Ube_Dragon,

I'm sorry that you lost your save game state on the Fran Bow game. Here are some things to consider:

  • Where does the game take you when you select the Continue Menu Pick on the Fran Bow Menu screen? If it takes you to the point in the game where Fran is talking with Dr. Deern, then it is likely that you chose "New Game" from the Fran Bow Menu screen earlier. This overwrites your progress in whatever Chapter you are playing just before you select "New Game".

  • Even if you selected "New Game" at some point after you began playing the game, the Chapters menu should allow you to restart Chapters you've already completed or started--in your case Chapter 1, 2, or 3 (since you said you got somewhere into Chapter 3 before you lost your game's progress). So can you select Chapter 3 on the Chapters menu and begin progress with that Chapter now?: Or are all the Chapters locked now?

If you can't restart Chapter 3 because the Chapters are locked on your game, here's a link to a savegame file which has Chapters 1 through 3 unlocked: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-V4ozvekwP4TjQ5d1o4TUlxWkk/view?usp=sharing. The file is called "savedata-Ch3-Beginning.ini". If you're playing on a Windows computer and don't see the ending ".ini", then you have "Hide File Extensions for Known File Types" checked ON (this is the Windows default), and you'll need to turn this off in order to properly rename the file correctly. See this guide for instructions for doing this: http://kb.winzip.com/kb/entry/26/. After downloading this file, you'll need to rename it to "savedata.ini". You didn't say what platform you're playing the game on (Windows/Mac/Linux),

On a Windows computer, this file is located on the same drive your Windows is installed on (usually the C: drive) at this location:

\users\[Your Windows login name]\appdata\roaming\Fran_Bow\.

So you'll have to delete (or rename) the file already there and then copy the file you just downloaded and name it "savedata.ini".

Then start up the game again and either select the "Continue" option or Chapter 3 on the Chapters menu off the Fran Bow Main Menu. You'll then be at the beginning of Chapter 3. If not, then exit the game and make sure that you renamed the file you downloaded correctly (including the ".ini" extension). You can also adjust the screen resolution and make the game play Full Screen if you wish (this savegame file defaults to 854 x 480 Windowed Mode) using the Options menu on the Fran Bow Main Menu screen.

I see from your Achievements Earned that you got into Chapter 3, Ube_Dragon; however, some of the areas in Chapter 3 can be explored in any order. Since I can't be sure what you have and have not done already, I leave you to replay all of Chapter 3 again. I urge you to move Fran to another screen, then quit the game and then start to play again. Select the Continue option to ensure that your game state is being saved automatically. Otherwise, unless you know what caused your loss of the "savedata.ini" file (did you have a disk crash, for example?), it may happen again.

This should get you on your way again, Ube_Dragon. I hope you enjoy playing the rest of the game.
