the walkthrough i am using does NOT explain how to get the shoes. it says something about a mechanical doll and clicking on wood but THERE IS NOTHING! i don't want a hint, tell me what to do

You need to be in the bar when it's empty and change the tempo on the player piano - this will cause the mantis to dance too fast and the shoes to fly off.

Go in the bar as Fran (not Mr. Midnight), and when you're in there change the season so that it's just you and Mr. Midnight. Click on the player piano to access the metronome and increase the tempo to the fastest it can go by selecting the blue, red, and yellow dials. The meter on the metronome hand should be at the very top of the hand (not in green, not almost to the top - it must be at the very top).

Once you do this, change the season back so that the bar is full again. The mantis will start his dance and won't be able to keep up with the rapid beat. Once he falls you'll be able to get his shoes.
