Location of the game?

I was wondering what country/place Fran Bow is supposed to take place in. I know a lot of people are saying that it's the United States, but I haven't found a definite answer. I thought it was odd because Fran has the last names of both her mother and father (Bow Dagenhart), which wouldn't be very common in the US during the 40s, but it might have been in Germany. I think this is important because of the theory that the game has to do with Nazi experimentation, and would lend a different interpretation of the game. Thoughts?

Oh, that is a distinct possibility. I know the Alice in the photo is a wink to Alice in Wonderland, which takes place in England.

I think the time according to the dates in the hospital notes, is october 1944 (if I remember right).

But they were driving in the right side of the road like in Europe. Definitely not set in the States. Canada?

Fran was born in 1934, the same year old Alice Liddlle died. This photo is just Fran's imagination and mostly easter egg from developers.
