I checked with the developers of Fran Bow (Natalia Figueroa and Isak Martinsson of Killmonday Games) and they told me that the resemblance between the Axolotl and Palontras is not a coincidence. After all, what better inspiration for Palontras' visuals (a doctor that gave Fran new limbs in Ithersta and healed her wound late in the game) than the Axolotl (who can regenerate its own limbs)?
For anyone else reading this, more information on the Axolotl can be found here:
http://losandes.com.ar/article/el-axolotl-un-anfibio-de-moda (Text is Spanish, picture is not Palontras, just a good friend who likes to be seen with him. )

For more information on Palontras , play the Fran Bow game, and you can be the judge--Does art imitate life?
Thanks for your observation and your post, ejkorvette.
