2-handed spears are very effective in novice fights and there is little risk of dying with gear that has good modifiers if you are concerned about fighting tournament AI without mail(hiring a physician is advised). Another tip is that you can field a character in both expert and master rank fights if you are short on good units because expert tier armor largely negates red damage other than from maces which are still unlikely to kill. You could always do aspirant matches with a pitchfork but that is a bit risky.
