Overall, I'd recommend the Plate Armor > Golem Armor
To be worth anything at all it needs two changes.
1.) Add the blue glowy glowy to the visor and give us night vision!
2.) Do the other half of powered armor and significantly increase the power of player attacks. Like double it!
Right now it's useless and frankly makes no sense whatsoever. Either the crystal powers the armor to act as an exoskeleton thus able to move it's own weight, or it does some spooky magic to reduce the weight of the armor. If it's the former it should enhance the speed and strength with which the user is able to attack. If it's the latter then the engineers in the game are idiots for wasting magic on something that offers little if any advantage over traditional armor.
That,s a little harsh I think. I agree that the suit isn't a huge improvment protection-wise from exceptional plate-armor (though certainly among the best armors there is currently) but the way I see it it's greatest advantage isn't the actual protection it offers but rather that it allows someone who hasn't invested heavily in MIA to wear full plate effectively. MIA 1 is enough to mostly negate it's encumbrance while powered-up, add MIA 2 and you can wear padded clothing underneath as well. Making it enhance the players attacks is a nice idea though.
I have used the golem-suit powered only by the encased crystal in the market and sewers and it has mostly worked just fine. As long as you are efficient with your movements the crystal should provide enough juice for 2-3 skirmishes, if you face multiple opponents in quick succesion you will get problems though. I have not tested how long a standard blue crystal can power the suit but I would guess that it lasts quite long and you can find many crystals and gain even more by defeating golems.
So at best, it saves the player a single skill point. However who actually neglects MIA when there are so few functional skills as it is? The only time I have done so is when I wanted to role play a mage who preferred silk shirts and fancy jackets OR if I wanted a particularly harsh challenge. In both cases I avoided the armor either way. Effectively the only thing the armor does is exchange one skill for a set of plate armor that requires tedious micromanagement and can crap the bed halfway through a fight making you too laden to maneuver effectively. It is so unbelievably laughably bad that the only reason to use it is for role playing reasons, just like a silk shirt.
They need to give it night vision in a bad way. It's retarded that you have to walk around with a torch if you opt to use what ostensibly should be the most powerful armor in the game so far.
Additionally they need to make it so the player can swing their weapon with the strength of a freaking golem because otherwise it is functionally worse than investing in regular armor in every way, and considering you have to invest in regular armor to some extent to even get the advantages out of the armor to begin with, there is simply never a reason to take it.
Basically I disagree that I am being too harsh, I think it is a terrible item in terms of stats and mechanics, and that it is in desperate need of some tweaking.
Yes, highly situational, like I said RP purposes, playing dress up with zombies, that sort of thing.
That sword I am hoping is little more than proof of concept for weapon and armor degradation over time and a repair system. It too has no use to the player other than to waste green crystals. Something neat as long as it doesn't take a year to implement, might be the ability to stab and break off the bone blade, causing a poison or bleeding effect on the target and using crystals to regrow the blade. If it's going to stay in the game it needs an overhaul into something unique, not just an extra 1.5 dots of sharpness for approximately seven attacks before needing precious green rocks not to be outdone by a rusty sword.
And yeah picking up golem halberds would be nice, in fact when I first got that armor years ago I thought that is exactly what it would allow. Looking at it now, it might actually be really awkward to use, but at the very least I want to be able to topple and toss humanoid enemies like the sentinels the armor is clearly built to emulate, regardless of whether or not I can do it with those halberds.
If you're worrying about a fight upcoming, just replace the gem. The gems in my experience last a decent while though, you probably have enough blue gems in the game to kill everything past the golems level in the armor.
Late game I give it to Derrin and he gets it with the rechargeable gem but when I was leaving the golem dungeon I used the suit on myself to genocide the remaining golems.
