The arena's meta game ♥♥♥♥ing sucks and is incredibly demoralizing.
It's so slow you start beyond gimped and improvement is all levels ahead of you, useless, or expensive as hell. Payouts are infuriatingly miniscule and make progress non existent, I can barely win any matches cause all 4 weapons avalible are terrible and types I'm not used to. I'd get a new one, but I'm treading water around five silver because of entry fees and my one (braindead and useless) AI partner whose failed every task he's had.

I liked the practise mode a lot especially when I found items I liked But the campaign I don't feel like doing and the arena is just hideous do 100% to the meta game portion,t in the arena proper it's just about winning and that's ♥♥♥♥ing hard to do when I'm inexperienced and equiped with CRAP. the entire inept tier should DIE I'm used to polearms and shield-mace combos, of those I've seen the cudgel once for below novice and I'll be ♥♥♥♥ed if I pay for that ♥♥♥♥.

Please PLEASE have more matches per tier and raise the reward also add partial rewards, elimination and fray just don't seem worth it when my gear is worse then everyone else and have to fight multiple to just end up with zero moneys, I can't feasibly beat elimination without pure luck (IE my first combatent having a weapon I can actually USE) otherwise I die on round 4 or 3 if I'm lazy.

I was super exited to start arena and now I've lost any motivation, I'm not making progress and I'm not learning very much since the game has become win instead of improve. Upkeep on AI dudes is one thing but entry fees (and not getting that back on win) for the inept level stuff at least should go to hell and never come back. Also increse healing times please, it's so unfair early game when you may aswell restart half the time least you be put in a permenanent handicap state.

Lastly ♥♥♥♥ cleavers, metal bars, blacksmith hammers, and ♥♥♥♥ing quarter staffs. I want my ♥♥♥♥ing axe and platemail back, I was consistenly beating the expert practise then, now a duel is a crapshoot half the time.

the actual gameplay is meaty and fun outside the aforementioned issues

Please don't fling insults at each other... doesn't do any good.
sorry^

Okay yes I'm bad with those weapons but I'm fine with the pole a couple of weapons and they're nowhere to be found, That's my issue. Also still the money system is still anti fun, progressing requires so much consistent play that I can't achieve anything.

Yes, the main arena can be frustrating while learning the basics. If you can't consistently win fights then I'd recommend practicing with nearly all the weapons available in the novice and expert practice arena so that you can experiment and learn how each weapon behaves. This will allow you to build some muscle memory and also figure out ways to avoid attacks from nearly all weapon types at the same time. Footwork, proper timing and accurate cursor movements tend to come with practice and these are essential to consistently winning fights.

Before anyone else says it, this is the only advice you need:

git gud.

No really, IMO you should stay away from the newer arena until you're good enough at dodging, it's crucial in the low tiers since you have so little armor.

NVM 8 hours in I'm done. I don't know what I'm doing wrong and aren't improving. I'm out.

8 hours is insufficient to get past the first stage of the learning curve. I understand your frustration, and the idiots saying git gud doesnt help. To be entirely honest, you havent even made it to the meta-game yet. What you're doing probably makes a lot of sense to you, but with only 8 hours of practice you are essentially more dangerous to yourself with a weapon than your computer foe.

At 20 hours you'll have a better idea of what you are doing. You will not have the basic controls and movements mastered though. This is ok. These games are difficult. Multiplayer Warband and War of the Roses is the exact same way.

at about 40 hours, you'll have a deeper understanding of the post mortem of your first 20 hours. You still will not have scratched the surface of mastering the combat system. You'll be winning more often, but still very basic in your methodology.

At about 100 hours you'll be very compotent and most of your losses will come from experiementing with completely optional attacks and techniques. You'll be able to win any arena fight.

Once you get to the point where you are comfortable and can begin experimenting, the game opens up to a whole new level. This is when you begin the meta-game. You've got at least 92 hours to go. The first 20 are the hardest by far.

Think of it like chess. You won't have it mastered in 8 games let alone 80 games.

Sometimes you also have to take a day or two away from it to let muscle memory set in. If you get frustrated with it, or have a bad day. Don't force it.

Metal bar and quarterstaff are the best tbh. I can consistently kill Master rank opponents as an Inept with a quarterstaff in challenger. It's actually very easy compared to other fights

I respect that and will give it some more time at some point, I have to go away fo a little while on sunday and will try some more when I get back, though if I do stop I've gained a whole lot of respect for this game and people who are good at it. thanks for not just saying Git Gud those comments are always kind of annoying :)

Try Practice Arena first.

I think the best/easiest way to make money early on is pugilism matches, you can enter matches of any rank and you get both money and xp for a little entry fee and without the risk of dying. Once you get the hang of boxing you should make 1+ silver coin every 1-2 minutes. Another match type I like is "Doubles", I was lucky enough to hire an NPC with 2 skills and that "better" quarterstaff and he beat his opponent every time in Inept "doubles" and "duels" (he died eventually though). So maybe look for an NPC like this one, it might fare better in combat. So if you take your time you can get past Inept, Aspirant without dealing with those crappy weapons.

I do agree the game can get frustrating for newbs like us, I play the game every evening since I got it, there are days when I play for 3 hours straight and other days when I rage quit after the first 5 minutes. I always get back though because I always think it was a one time mistake and I won't do it again. :))
