Exanima

Exanima

This game has simultaneously the most fun and addicting combat and the worst control scheme ever
Oof I really love the combat system, and just can't stop playing. On the other hand this is hands down the worst control system I've ever had the displeasure of using. I've never played any non-shooter/strategy games with mouse and it already feels awkward, and mouse movement just happens to be vital in this game, I find the mouse movement in combat way too sensitive as my cursor would go everywhere and my character would turn in circle and there's no way to adjust this...

I really hope I can get used to the combat system because I'm absolutely loving the gameplay so far... Is there anyone in the same boat? Do you have any tips on getting better with the controls?

Go to arena and spend some time practicing. And try to do what you are not so used to more often. You should find that the control method actually allows you to perform your thoughts more accurately. Enjoy the game!

Combat system is perfect along with the movement. Once you learn to play it, you will understand. Its nothing like in other games. Once mastered, its perfect.

You sure you changing to combat mode too? try using mouse for hits and wasd for movement while fighting. Stepping into attack gives it more momentum and force, just like in real life and thats also why the system is like this and will never change. Learn it.

What I'm really having trouble grasping is how in combat mode your character rotates based on mouse movement. The only games I've played using mouse require constantly moving the mouse, and this proves to be a very bad habit to have in this game. Subconsciously I would want to shift the camera with house or move with mouse and that would really mess up the fight.

I get it why they made it this way but the fact that it's so different from everything else makes it very hard to get used to. Especially since it's an absolutely integral and critical part of the control, with no way of toning down the mouse sensitivity.

Just keep practicing, you will enjoy once you get it working. Took me many many tries and deaths before i learned it. Thats part of the fun too :)

You should also control your mouse movement, to be more efficient. The less you flail it around helps, try to make a swing by drawing arc with the mouse while doing it. When you combine them both, you wont be going around like drunken master, more like melee master :)

Stop the mouse when you hit, then you dont turn too much and can continue with another swing from the other side. Just imagine how you would hit the enemy in real world.

One effective tactic is to stab everyone on the first 3 levels. Stabbing aims where your mouse cursor is, so that might help too learning the ropes. Step into the stab and see zombies 1-2 hit dead :) The very first iron bar you find that you can stab with, the 1 handed one, works well.

They made it different because no other system offers the flexibility and feel of true combat.

oh yeah I'm enjoying the game alright lol. The fighting system is so fun and addictive. If I can get used to the control it would absolutely be my fave.

Thanks for the tips and I will practice more with them.

Try to lower your mouse cursor speed in Windows settings(?) or the DPI of your actual mouse itself. Make sure mouse acceleration(Windows calls it Enhanced Pointer Precision) is off as well. That setting can really screw with accuracy and consistency.

I made a video beginner's guide that might help you with some of the stuff you mentioned.

While I agree with most of what you've said, I wouldn't call the current state of fighting system as perfect. It's very interesting and unusual, but it's not perfect. At least for now. The movement is awkward and has no variety of steps or lunges. No ability to change stance or grip from left to right hand. Full contact medieval combat and HEMA are my hobbies, so I definitely can appreciate what we have in this game so far, and yet there's much more to be done before I could say that Exanima is close to perfect.

It is perfect for computer simulated game and combat. Cant be too close to real fighting, that just doesnt work that well in games where its also supposed to be fun.

Stances and changing grip im pretty sure they add when they have time and other things are done, shouldnt be too difficult.

Yes this helped tremendously teaching me the game, I watched it right after I started, thank you! But unfortunately the problem I have with the controls just takes time to get used to.

You´ll eventually get it bruh. Just play it (a lot) and it will finally click. Once you get it, controls will not seem dumb anymore.

Edit: Didn´t read the whole thread, but it seems as you are moving the mouse too much? The system works with subtle movements really, you can aim to the target then move it sligthly to adjust attack direction (i.e left to right swing). No need to move the mouse around as I´ve seem many new players doing.

It's important to be one with the character. Don't move the cursor too fast for your character. Once it clicks, you'll have learnt it for life.

Glad it helped, hope it fully clicks soon! Mouse sensitivity does make a big difference, if you can find a way to lower it I would definitely give it a try.

Good joke, best of the month.
Movement system is JUnK. Simple as that. Arena practing has little to no value for the actual game, where every little elenation makes you a helpless target.
And every corridor has that if you come too close to a wall, which has this thing near the floor, don't know how it's called.
It's particularly aggravating at the corner.
So, control in caseof movement is complete ♥♥♥♥.

And no, I rolfstomped all the arena except beast figth, it doesn't help at all with awful movement control - and doesn't help to play actual game at all, as game has different layout and enemy types with different animation.
