You sure you changing to combat mode too? try using mouse for hits and wasd for movement while fighting. Stepping into attack gives it more momentum and force, just like in real life and thats also why the system is like this and will never change. Learn it.
I get it why they made it this way but the fact that it's so different from everything else makes it very hard to get used to. Especially since it's an absolutely integral and critical part of the control, with no way of toning down the mouse sensitivity.
Just keep practicing, you will enjoy once you get it working. Took me many many tries and deaths before i learned it. Thats part of the fun too :)
You should also control your mouse movement, to be more efficient. The less you flail it around helps, try to make a swing by drawing arc with the mouse while doing it. When you combine them both, you wont be going around like drunken master, more like melee master :)
Stop the mouse when you hit, then you dont turn too much and can continue with another swing from the other side. Just imagine how you would hit the enemy in real world.
One effective tactic is to stab everyone on the first 3 levels. Stabbing aims where your mouse cursor is, so that might help too learning the ropes. Step into the stab and see zombies 1-2 hit dead :) The very first iron bar you find that you can stab with, the 1 handed one, works well.
They made it different because no other system offers the flexibility and feel of true combat.
Thanks for the tips and I will practice more with them.

While I agree with most of what you've said, I wouldn't call the current state of fighting system as perfect. It's very interesting and unusual, but it's not perfect. At least for now. The movement is awkward and has no variety of steps or lunges. No ability to change stance or grip from left to right hand. Full contact medieval combat and HEMA are my hobbies, so I definitely can appreciate what we have in this game so far, and yet there's much more to be done before I could say that Exanima is close to perfect.
It is perfect for computer simulated game and combat. Cant be too close to real fighting, that just doesnt work that well in games where its also supposed to be fun.
Stances and changing grip im pretty sure they add when they have time and other things are done, shouldnt be too difficult.
Edit: Didn´t read the whole thread, but it seems as you are moving the mouse too much? The system works with subtle movements really, you can aim to the target then move it sligthly to adjust attack direction (i.e left to right swing). No need to move the mouse around as I´ve seem many new players doing.
Good joke, best of the month.
Movement system is JUnK. Simple as that. Arena practing has little to no value for the actual game, where every little elenation makes you a helpless target.
And every corridor has that if you come too close to a wall, which has this thing near the floor, don't know how it's called.
It's particularly aggravating at the corner.
So, control in caseof movement is complete ♥♥♥♥.
