Some tactics to defeat the beast are to use footwork to avoid heavy blows (even if strikes land you can use footwork to negate most of the damage many times), keep trying to get it to switch its focus between attacking you and your hirelings (the more time the ogre spends switching targets the less time it spends attacking), if you can't entirely dodge an attack try stepping in the same direction of the attack to lessen the impact or even hug the ogre since the end of his weapon is the most deadly, circle away from the direction he's attacking to target his flanks.

Buy full set of novice armor and clothing with superior or exceptional quality. Invest one or two skill points into lowering encumbrance, other skill points into better fighting. Using two handed weapons greatly increases range of attacks. Bardiche is the easiest weapon to kill ogre with. Be more aggressive, try to constantly hit it. Keep in mind that you have limited time fighting beast, ogre will drain your or hirelings' health with almost each of his blows, so you have to work fast and keep pushing on. As Tony said above, using your hirelings as a distraction is a good way to land many successful hits.

Get enough hits on it with the Bardiche, I've killed it twice before on Novice with the Bardiche, could help to arm your hirelings with it too. If you can get it into a corner to its right then it can't swing effectively and you can usually kill it.

NOVICE ogre fights are the most dangerous, because you have only leather armor, which is a poor defense against blunt damage.(well, against any kind of dmg, really) so just skip this, get to higher tiers, and try expert ogre fights. These are the least dangerous, cause ogre got a sword and you at that point got chain and plate armor. And good helmets to protect you from critical dmg. I always try novice ogre fights with only exceptional armor. And most importantly, have exceptional cap on your head, so he can´t 1-hit you. But it is always risky and you always get a lot of red dmg from novice and adept ogre fights. I only try novice ogre fights when I have spare fighters and never with my main character.
One other thing, that increased my chances on survival are CROUCHING. You can actually crouch under ogre´s attacks, if led from certain angles. There are times when his attacks will surely hit you, unless you crouch.(but there is some risk that you fail and get a headshot)
And one last thing - the ogres got a long weapon, so always try to be near him, rather than being away from him.(So you can fight back)

You can always hit esc and just forfeit the match(if you´re not already dead)

thats a useful trick to keep main character alive xD
the best way to kill it BY far is to get the sharpest swords on your guys and just stab the boy to death. very easy, i play on novice all the time with that

The way I do it is with a spear (the longer one), and thrust attacks. The spear is the best weapon against the novice beast IMO, because it has the best range. You can attack extremely quickly, if you can do it correctly. If you keep the thrust button and the mouse button pressed down, you can do several rapid thrusts, but you have to actually land the attacks in order to get the shorter reset time on the thrust. If you miss, the reset time is longer. Shield is almost useless, because even with the shield, the beast will throw your fighters around easily. I have one of my hirelings with the same spear, and the other with the two-handed warhammer (the other best weapon for the novice beast IMO)

How did you manage that? I have 115 hours on record and I have a full roster of master level fighters. 5 player and 2 NPCs ...

well, if you use only your main character, then most of your save file will disappear for good xD

no, it's not necessary. For some reason your companions' AI doesn't change when fighting the beast, they still treat it as a "normal" enemy, so they use footwork a good lot. if you're low of money, you can try axes or the morningstar, those are particularly effective. While your companions are doing whatever and getting little strikes in, you should be rushing the beast and agressively thrusting into them with the highest quality sword. That's the best way to kill those bastards off.

I'd say it depends a fair bit on luck. If the ogre decides to go for you, you will most likely die. (If its not you, the person targeted by the beast will almost always die)

Equip your guys with long two handed weapons, i would not advise giving your AI companions spears since they can misuse them.

Do not bring a shield, it won't do anything - you will still be thrown across the room if it hits you.

Overall the beast is an extremely risky and difficult enemy to beat,(especially the master one) if you decide to go for it go in with a mindset of getting your guys killed.

not really. the beast is quite easy avoid, you can just go under his right-left swings and his left-right swings you can run past. the overhands are the easiest thing to avoid.

Meh, there are no good twohanders in novice apart from bardiche and maul. but maul is garbage against the beast because it's blunt and the bardiche is somewhat difficult to use.

shields are surprisingly effective against beasts. as long as you have good footwork and you're agressive, you can push the beast with not too much difficulty.

in general your guys will never die on adept, expert or master beasts. i always play novice, however, because it's too much fun stabbing the living ♥♥♥♥ out of him.
