I managed to make a fairly decent controller layout
I have managed to create a decent binding that carried me from start to finish (as of time of writing it's the Markets)

You'll need either a xbox/playstation/switch or steam controller. Go to community bindings and look for "Phishfood's bindings for PS4"

If you have a Switch or Xbox controller hit the button for "show other controller types"

MAKE SURE WINDOWS SCALING IS SET TO 100% IF YOU HAVE A HIGH RESOLUTION MONITOR, IT WILL THROW OFF THE MOUSE REGION SETTINGS THESE BINDINGS RELY ON

The controls are split into 2 modes, exploration and combat. To switch modes you click options/start

Common Controls:
left stick: move
options/start: change between combat/exploration mode
share/select: pause menu
X/square: zoom in (this is on turbo, so hold to zoom all the way out)
Y/triangle: zoom out (this is on turbo, so hold to zoom all the way in)

Exploration Mode
right stick: rotate/tilt camera
L1/left bumper: hold to run
L2/left trigger: HOLD to enable cursor mode
R2/right trigger: left click
d-pad up/down/left/right: inventory, switch weapon, skills, power tree
Circle/B: close all UI (this just presses tab twice, useful for closing down inventory windows)
A/Cross: TOGGLE talk mode
R1/right bumper: TOGGLE powers mode

Exploration Mode: Cursor
right stick: move cursor
R2/right trigger: left click (hold to this and use D-PAD to rotate held objects)
Circle/B: close a UI window (as opposed to closing all windows)
R1/right bumper: double click
Cross/A: move cursor to inventory

Exploration Mode: Powers
right stick: move cursor
left stick: powers radial menu 1 to 10, click-in left stick to activate power

Exploration Mode: Talk
left stick: radial menu 1 to 5, click-in to use speech option

Combat Mode:
right stick: aim your weapon
right stick click-in: center camera behind your cursor
L2/left trigger: crouch
L1/left bumper: thrust attack
R2/right trigger: swing attack
R1/right bumper: overhead attack
Cross/A: switch weapon
Circle/B: HOLD for run mode (for making quick escapes without leaving combat mode)
d-pad: up/left/down/right will use powers 1, 2,,3, 4 respectively

PROBLEMS:
mode de-sync: when you change between exploration and combat mode on the controller, it also presses the TAB key to change the mode in game, sometimes certain actions can cause this to desync, to resolve, press start to pause game, click option/start, unpause.

aiming powers in combat mode: you are limited to the small circle around your character where the mouse is allowed to go, to make it reach further zoom out.

combat mode only allows you to use your first 4 powers, so assign powers you'd use in combat to slots 1-4. Technically you can assign up to 8 powers on d-pad but hitting the diagonals is not consistent on most d-pads.

ADVANTAGES:
in exploration the controls uses a mixture of gamepad and keyboard+mouse controls. So you can make turns while running AND rotate the camera. With just kb+m you can run and turn the camera but your character is stuck running in one direction.

Carry large objects AND move at the same time. Yup, no more dragging picking up and placing objects over and over or putting it on top of your head. A bug in the game makes you move very slowly even when standing still until you drop the object so be careful doing this near pit traps.

Thank you.

Thanks Phishfood. I was just bouncing around the room while this game was downloading. Then, as I got ready to enjoy myself, I realized there is no option for my XBox 360 gamepad. This is just some chalkdust torture, not being able to play this awesome game on my gamepad! I have no idea how to get this process started. Would you please help me out? I guess I'll just be wading in the velvet sea for your reply.

So before you launch the game, go to Exanima in your library, click where it says [Controller Configuration], then at the bottom click [Browse Configs] then at the side click [Community] then at the bottom click [Show Other Controller Types]

My config should be listed, click it, then at the bottom click [Apply Configuration]
