The possibility for beautiful and flowing movements is right there. Every time i play something amazing happens(Still, after thousands of hours - things i see for the 1st time). ;d
Have you actually played it ? It does take some time to become decent of course. The difference between a very good player and a newbie can be huge in terms of looks, finesse and effectiveness. So yeah, it could be goofy i suppose, if the player is not very good. ;d
The 'animations' have been greatly improved in most recent patches as well. Looking fairly good now even if player is going berserk with the controls - compared to before at the least. ;d
If it's just the animations putting you off - I'd honestly say its a non issue, they are just a small by product of an incredible physics fighting/combat system, they can be as hilarious as it is awesome.
Yeah, fights tend to look pretty messy outside of movies and precanned game animations.
