Arena gold progress is too slow for me. Any tips?
So, I have already gotten to master arena two times in the past, but I cheated the ♥♥♥♥ out of the game with the duplicating item bug (that I discovered alone, I don't even know if it's still there).

I want to do a fair play this time, but by god, gold progress is way too slow, or items available to buy are too expensive.

Do you guys have any tips? Is there something I'm missing?

You get the most gold by hunting down beasts. They're rather easy to take down once you got the hang of it. If that's what you're already doing, is the progression in arena probably simply to slow for your liking.

Else from downing the beast (which is very high risk high reward), spamming elimination matches is the safest way to earn both money and xp fast.
In the start just buy really low quality armor from your hired merchant, it's pretty cheap but still offers decently good protection. Then save up and get the best weapon you are proficient in and from here on you can be more aggressive with your fights so you'll clear out matches faster.
Thanks guys! I think in the past there was no beast in arena, so I never actually tried. Do I need 3 guys to take it down? IIRC, that beast is also present on the story mode, right? I think it killed me.

You need 2 other npc hirelings. It's a different beast then in story mode, this one wields a weapon.

And just a tip, maybe avoid the novice tier beast. The lack of helmets can make this fight your last. Master and expert tier beasts on the other hand can often be fought without suffering any lasting injuries. Some claim that they lost people to the master tier beast but non of my guys came even close, so I don't know what went wrong there.

Ah ok. I hired a dude but he's inept... Dunno if it was a dumb choice but I went to a Elimination and one of the fights almost got me killed, so i needed a time off. Been using him to heal and double fights. I see there are a lot of new weapons but none of them seem to be in the inept or aspirant rank, so it's iron bar till there.

Hire a Merchant and then set him to filter only the weapons or armor you want for any given level.

You need 3 non-player character (first one you make in the arena) to fight the beast. I recommend doing Master or Above as to not get killed without a helmet.

Lastly, gold isn't that bad. Get someone up to master and then burn through all the eliminations, challenger missions and so forth until you get enough gold to hire the people needed for beast fights. Then finally, those pay out greatly.

Eliminations are the fastest for exp and gold, indeed, aside from beast. And generally safer than beast, especially at novice.

If you are not used to handling the beast there can be many casualties at lower rank where you lack armor.

What? I thought the hirelings background jobs were only there for flavor. Can NPCs do more than simply fight on the arena?

Oh yeah, absolutely. Buy a merchant and he stands by the mission board and can filter gear (weapons/armor or both) and by rank! Check them out next time.
