In the start just buy really low quality armor from your hired merchant, it's pretty cheap but still offers decently good protection. Then save up and get the best weapon you are proficient in and from here on you can be more aggressive with your fights so you'll clear out matches faster.
And just a tip, maybe avoid the novice tier beast. The lack of helmets can make this fight your last. Master and expert tier beasts on the other hand can often be fought without suffering any lasting injuries. Some claim that they lost people to the master tier beast but non of my guys came even close, so I don't know what went wrong there.
You need 3 non-player character (first one you make in the arena) to fight the beast. I recommend doing Master or Above as to not get killed without a helmet.
Lastly, gold isn't that bad. Get someone up to master and then burn through all the eliminations, challenger missions and so forth until you get enough gold to hire the people needed for beast fights. Then finally, those pay out greatly.
If you are not used to handling the beast there can be many casualties at lower rank where you lack armor.
Oh yeah, absolutely. Buy a merchant and he stands by the mission board and can filter gear (weapons/armor or both) and by rank! Check them out next time.
