There is also a thaumaturgy (magic) update coming sometime """"soon""""
It depends on what you want.
If you want something that has a plot, good character development, and features common to games developed after 1990, then no it's not worth it. You'll be disappointed. You'll play it for a short time and then quit. It's still a very short campaign game anyway with only around half of the levels available. The only thing IMO the campaign really has going for it is that it generates a really good sense of suspense.
If you're looking for a fighting game (that likes to pretends the combat isn't really it's best feature) and like geeking out into deeply complex game mechanics of said fighting game, then Exanima is fantastic and totally worth it. You'll get a few hundred hours out of it if this is you.
Much like how many consider the deeper story of Dark souls. Alas, there are also many that don't.
It depends on the person, on whether they like that sort of story telling and the need to piece together information. But yes a story/lore does exists and for those that really enjoy such games this will likely give a similar enjoyment.
I'm glad you like it. I'll elaborate in that it simply never drew me in because it's 100% completely inconsequential to the game right now. In the current state of the game, I feel the story/plot is just along for the ride. You can engage it and read all of the scrolls and whatnot and deep dive into the lore, but meh I just can't bring myself to care when none of it actually seems to matter. If it does matter, then it hasn't shown me yet how it matters because I've stomped through the game several times and give less regard to it now than ever before.
I also do not consider hidden items like tiny keys and clues that blend in with the stones in obscure places to be good plot items these days. They just punish people who can't see the small details without going nose to screen. I find the parts of the game where you're just roaming around through empty hallways you've already cleared for an hour looking for a tiny key (that's virtually invisible to you) not to be enjoyable. This seems to constitute a fair amount of the game, especially in the first several play-throughs w/o guides.
So I certainly would not recommend the game to a neutral person for its plot or campaign in its current state. The arena however is awesome and totally worth it. There's even some good news in that story is only half done, so there's plenty of time for it to show up still, require me to care about it, and change my opinion.
