Thoughts on torches and new light sources
The torch is awesome, really adds to the immersion and I often use it even when I already have the night vision helmet. But now that we have a companion my immersion can be even doubled, if only we could obtain a second torch.

And another thing about the torch. Last time I played the game dual wielding still wasnt a thing, so when I started playing again after the 0.7.0 patch, for some reason I expected that we would be able to dual wield with the torch. So here I am leveling up in the campaign, finally getting the dual wielding skill, excitedly equipping a sword and the torch and immediately getting bummed out because the torch doesnt count as a weapon in your off hand. It would be ♥♥♥♥♥♥ and not very effective, but wouldnt you feel badass fighting zombies a sword and a torch?

And now about some new light sources. Seeing all those magic orb lights on the walls, I always thought of being able to just rip one off and use it on my belt as a lantern. Probably would be better to handle it as a unique item, found somewhere in the later floors, but having a magic lantern would also be pretty cool, not to mention we would finally get some use out of those belts we all wear just because we can, even though they dont do squat to protect you from attacks. Would be interesting to see how it would work with the shadows but it can work as more of a directional light, compared to the area illumination of the torch. Not better, just different.

I was bummed about that too especially on the level 1, using the torch to block and another for sword would have made things easier.

When I heard there would be a companion, my very first thought was that he would come equiped with a torch. How the hell is there only one torch in the entire world when there are wall fixtures all around that look specifically designed to hold a torch. Table legs, rotted cloth and all kinds of wood every where, yet Derrin never thought to make himself a torch.

We had a dev meeting last Thursday, and this was one of the topics. Unfortunately since all lighting is dynamic and not baked, there is a limit to how many light sources the engine can handle at once.

We did think about being able to transfer the light helmet's enchantment to a helmet of your choice, but not a lot is planned atm. I'm sure something will remedy this, since as of now you're either limiting yourself to a 1h weapon, or one type of helmet.

A scroll explains what happens when removing the orbs from the wall.

it was mentioned in a scroll somewhere in lvl 1. some dude tried to rip out one of the "light bulbs" in an attempt to get more healing salve (the glow of the "light bulbs" and the healing salve is somewhat similar) but shortly after he removed it from the wall, it lost it's glow. so i don't think they'd be very good light sources to carry around.

Okay, now it makes sense.

So Im guessing thats why the entrance to the Catacombs is the FPS destroyer that it is? The several fires there are a big hit to performance. The room does look amazing with all the shadows that they cast though.

And another thing about the torch. If you equip a shield in your left hand, the character switches his hold on the torch and holds it like a weapon even when not in combat mode. Dont know if its intended. Not a big problem but reduces your visibility if you for some reason want to hold a torch and a shield. And any comment on dual wielding with a torch and a weapon?

I'm super glad that the issue is at least being discussed.

It's seems to be a magic torch, the fire never ends. I think Thaven's scrolls mentioned this one time.

you mean the scroll that talks about neverending fire? yes, that would make sense.

Lantern shield. Torch mace.

If the torch is magical, then how about a crystal or something else you can combine with the torch to let it shine brighter? Because when Derrin runs after you with the torch the light barely covers the ground in front of you, and I'd rather let him carry the torch and handle the combat myself.

Being able to pluck torches or hang them on walls could be cool as well !

Not to mention crafting them !
