With magic, monsters, and a fantasy setting, I think they have some leeway for dual wielding. It's not a sim.
Well, dual wielding is not so unrealistic as you might think. It was used in history, just not two big swords, but a sword and a dagger, for example.

There's an abundance of information about it if you look for it.
Trained in Arnis (Filipino Martial Arts) a bit and I can say it definitely works. The benefit is quite the same with a sword and shield but you can overwhelm your opponent by having him watch out for one more weapon and can work against large shields and even pole weaponry. This style though is very hard since ambidexterity is a must and it is much more dangerous to defend versus actually equipping a shield. I see a lot of people preferring to have a freehand because it is much easier to control the enemy (e.g grabbing the wrist)
That being said there's way better options than dual swords. A shield is way better when used offensively, and if you are going to dual wield you should take something that side swings well in the offhand like a mace. rather than another sword.
