We've had a few people having trouble with controllers, so here's our definitive guide:

Do I need a controller to play Push Me Pull You?

Not necessarily, but it is highly recommended.

Push Me Pull You can be put into Special Keyboard Mode, but depending on your keyboard, you may have issues when trying to hold down lots of keys at once.

This is called key jamming (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rollover_(key)) and is a hardware constraint. You may be able to avoid key jamming by using a different keyboard, or by plugging in more than one keyboard, so fewer keys are being held down on each.

Which controllers are officially supported?

How do I use Special Keyboard Mode?

Special Keyboard Mode lets you play PMPY with keyboard bindings instead of controllers.

Secret Keyboard Mode can be activated by pressing ALT+SHIFT+TILDE on the character select screen. This will deactivate any controllers connected, and use keyboard inputs instead.

Combined with JoyToKey (http://joytokey.net/en/), Special Keyboard Mode can let you play PMPY with otherwise unsupported controller configurations.

We recommend using Special Keyboard Mode and JoyToKey for anyone who is having persistent controller issues.

What about Steam Controllers?

Steam controllers are not officially supported, however some people have been able to use them natively without any issues.

If you want to use a Steam Controller, we recommend setting it to Gamepad mode, which will emulate an Xbox 360 controller. Any other mapping will not work natively.

Some people have had problems using Steam Controllers, that seem to be linked to the controller profile used. Controller profiles seem to be causing a few different issues, and are difficult to troubleshoot. If you are having problems, you might want to try changing your controller profile and restarting Steam.

Note that Steam controllers will not work natively on Mac OS as they are unable to emulate Xbox 360 controllers. On a Mac you will need to use Special Keyboard Mode.

I sometimes use a Steam Controller, but Push Me Pull You seems to think I have it plugged in even when I’m not using it.

Steam seems to sometimes create ‘phantom’ controllers even when a Steam controller is not plugged in.

If you are having this problem, we recommend changing your Steam controller profile and restarting Steam. Some people have been able to solve this issue by exiting Steam.

If these steps don’t resolve your issue, we recommend using Special Keyboard Mode.

What can I do if my controller isn’t working or the game is detecting the wrong controllers?

Some other hardware or software can falsely be identified as controllers, leading to ‘phantom’ controller issues. Known to cause problems are vJoy and certain gameboards (especially if they have an analog stick).

A surefire work around is to use Special Keyboard Mode.

Is there a way for you to add support for Gamecube Controllers using the Nintendo Wii U Gamecube Controller Adapter? I see mayflash ones supported but not the official adapter.

I've had the game for more than a year, and it says I've "played" 76 minutes. I've spent 70 of those minutes trying to configurate it with 3 kinds of controllers, 6 different controllers.
Steam controller (non native, ok), xbox 360 and xbox1. On steam link, pc and laptop, and the only time I could get 4 players working was on the laptop, with a steam link and 3 xbox360.
I'd like to play it on the couch, but sadly it seems impossible to play 4 or even 2 people.

I just tried the game for the last time: 3 xbox controllers 1 xbox1 (brand f new for THIS game) and it still doesn't work. Configuration is ok, i can play other games with them, no further problems.
Can't you just launch a controller update after all these years? This is disappointing.

I'm not going to spend more time on this game trying some hack to set the controllers as keyboards and then XBOX controllers again, which THEY ARE. This game is a scam, no doubt.
