Episode 6, Torturing Raiden
So what was that white substance the "doctor" removed and said "This should alleviate some of the [outburst]?" I'm not very knowledgeable on information regarding surgery or torture like actions. (A nail, through the eye, to the brain?) I think the nail hit the brain. So I'm thinking some part of the cerebral cortex must've been hit to help with maintaing the aggression. What boggles me, is that is it even possible to insert a nail that size through the eye without causing blindness or something? Unless it entered elsewhere not seen on camera, yes, I know this is a show and I did take into consideration raiden might have above average healing abilities, but I'm asking if those are'nt the reasons, and if so; then what are they? I already tried elsewhere and I haven't gotten a reply 'there' either.

TLDR
So To sum up what this question is;
What is that white substance wiped off the nail (part of the eye?), and how is raiden seemingly not scarred from that, and did the nail hit the brain just past the eye?

He was doing a lobotomy. Essentially they are destroying the frontal lobe of the brain. This used to be performed back in the 30's through 50's but gradually declined as new medicines were developed to control mental illness. The white stuff is probably his brain but I would imagine they just did it for the episode as the brain still remains in the skull. Also the way he inserted it through the eye is correct. Usually the prodceure is done rather quickly. They numb the patient then go to work which doesn't take long. The side effects are rather steep though as some were completely incapacitated ot died from the procedure.

On a side note, I did see an interview of a person who had the procedure done as a child. He said his life changed in that he doesn't have the ambitions most people do. He wishes the procdure was never done since he lost a literal piece of himself.
