No CD Problems with XvT
Obviously others have had this problem as well. The main menu pops up for XvT and BoP, yet when I click on either, I am presented with a No CD error. Disney has no clue how to deal with this problem (as I was directed to their customer support page via Steam). Did I really just pay $10 for a game that isn't going to work? Tsk tsk Steam.

If anyone has any workarounds for this, please let me know. I used to play this game for hours on end as a kid, and I'd like to relive some of the nostalgia.

I had the same problem...until I fixed it. The problem on my system was because the following files were incorrectly identified as viruses (the hash matched a known virus) and was therefore quarantined and missing from the game install folder. I'm guessing these files specifically have something to do with the "No CD" override:

\steamapps\common\STAR WARS X-Wing vs TIE Fighter\z_xvt__.exe
\steamapps\common\STAR WARS X-Wing vs TIE Fighter\BalanceOfPower\z_xvt__.exe

Add them to your virus scanner exception list, verify the integrity of your game install, and the game should launch (if the source of the problem is the same as mine).

Note: I am running Windows 8.1 and did not have to launch as Administrator.

I tried your fix, but my version doesn't seem to have those files . . . Any other suggestions from anyone?

Do you have the Steam version? It's possible your AV program already deleted them. Try verifying the integrity of your game install to see if they reappear. Your problem might be that they are NOT present.

I do have the steam version, I'll try it thanks

Tried it and you were correct. Unfortunately even after I excepted them, the game still didn't launch-I could get the intro screen to Balance of Power, but then it still demanded a CD-ROM . . . c'est la guerre . . .

Yeah it's still asking for the CD, that's really the only problem I have now..

i hada turn off my antivirus protection so it wouldnt get rid of z_xv1.exe that classified posted then i put it as trusted source then the game said i was missing smackw32.dll file so i had to download it then i was able to get into game

I'm glad it worked for someone.

The lucky few ey? Maybe they thought customers had really old computers with no av and windows 95.

Same problem here. :/

Doubt it helps, but FYI: those z_xvt__.exe files are the main game binaries. Running them manually should drop you directly into the game. You can still run into the proper CD check from there though. Note that Balance of Power has the trickier CD check (as it originally randomly checked the XvT and the BoP CD), so might want to try getting XvT to work first.

And why is this forum censoring a misspelling of a completely normal and inoffensive verb (get)???
