In any event, you won't have twist/rocker control as XvT only recognizes the primary X axis for yaw (you can switch it to roll by holding down a button), primary Y axis for pitch, and throttles.
Use your old stick if u got one, but I strongly recommend you to use one with POV because in the original version released 20 years ago u cant use a joystick with more than 3 or 4 buttons (i' m not sure exactly but i remember that u can t remap the buttons) and u have to use the keyboard every time and it s more difficult to play, specially in dogfights when u have to make adjustments very fast. This version is the same, with the only (and i think very useful) option to map a "modern" joystick with all it' s buttons. I've mapped the POV with the 4 actions that i use when i cant move my sight on the keyboard and i want to focus only with the fight. I think i was a good player almost 20 years ago with my old 3 buttons stick, but now i' m better (subjective) with the addition of the POV. I' m using: POV up; transfer partial energy from lasers to shields, POV down; Transfer partial energy from shields to lasers, POV right; transfer all energy from lasers to shields, POV left; target nearest enemy targeting you.
Sorry for my english, the idea is: if u can go for an actual stick with more than 3 or 4 buttons, go for it. With POV if it s possible.
The original version, released 18 years ago (1997) - supports up to 20 buttons plus 4-way hat and you CAN remap the buttons.
Maybe you need this thread to refresh yourself on?

My old stick was a PC Raider Joystick SV-206, and no pc I have now has the type of plugin in it requires. It was incredibly basic, with just 2 triggers, so if there's something just as simple that plugs in with usb then that's what I'm after. This is the only game I'd need it for and I'm fine with using the keyboard for buttons.

I was wrong, maybe i was confused with X wing and Tie Fighter, both had only some joystick support. But i don't remember exacly if those ones can be played with a stick with more than 3 or 4 buttons and 4 way hat. Not my intention to create a misunderstanding. Sorry.
No need to be sorry, confusion has just been creating some unintended misinformation that can get a little annoying sometimes. A no-fault problem, really. And yes, the original X-wing and TIE Fighter games were limited to 4 buttons (as far as I can remember), as that was the most that could be recognized over an analog gameport connection.
Yes, you said it: analog. Beautiful word. Every day passes I hate more modern games. I got the original CDs, both XW vs TF (2 discs, 1 single player, 1 multiplayer) and Balance of Power (1 disc), saw the game on steam 1 week ago, confirmed that is running on modern windows, purchased it immediately.Tried to apply 3D hardware acceleration but failed. Read that there's a patch that 3D hardware works but only with the GOG version. Purchased the GOG version yesterday, applied the patch but still doesn't working. But, hey, I will continue playing this masterpiece even that I can' t enable the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ 3D hardware acceleration. Just playing the game how it looks, a 18 years old game. But an awesome one (these days I confirmed that was a very advanced game for it's era).
PS: sorry if there's any write error, my english is not as good as I would.
