It could make for a great space combat sim
That assumes a remake wouldn't screw it up and release anyway, of course.
And even if they could solve this, well, one other thing comes to mind - I'd like to not have to drop two months of paychecks to get a PC able to run the game on other than minimum settings.
I think you're confusing this game for X-wing... TOTALLY different game.
Yup. X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter came on one or two (can't remember exactly) CD's and not floppies.
2 CDs: a master disc - with single-player and multiplayer capabilities (roughly 200 megs of total material, NOT including the redbook background music) - and a multiplayer-only version that you could let a guest use for LAN play. The fact that you were given an extra copy for that purpose was pretty awesome in its own right. The Balance of Power add-on upped the count to 3 CDs.
Yeah, they're actually sitting right next to me on my desk right now...
That wouldn't be true. Optimization of meshes would help along with the fact that the models are not filling the entire screen (less work for the pixel shader).
There are a number of games that I play now with lots of stuff going on with spacecraft and my machine is on average 5 or 6 years old. It has 0 issues with a bunch of things on screen at once.
Basically what we want is something that looks good at 1920x1080 16:9 (1920x1200 16:10). This can easily be done without requiring people to buy a brand new 2000 dollar system.
Because I don't think people who would be tapped into making a remake would *understand* restraint in doing the graphics and engine. I think we'd wind up with a graphically bloated mess which looks gorgeous but starts running like crap when serious dogfighting starts.
(Which is when I really, really don't want performance issues. Hard enough to fly a TIE "one hit wonder" without that.)
I know the fans probably would be satisfied with less. I don't think a developer would. Hence why I really am cautious about even voicing a "that'd be nice". Really, I'd be happy just with this as soon as I can get a new gamepad or something. (Sadly my old one, a Gravis Gamepad Pro, will *not* work anymore.)
