How to edit fighter stats

I was wondering if anyone knows how to edit the stats for the ships for the campaign?

For instance: making your ship go faster, adding more shield strength, making lasers/warheads do more damage, or allowing the use of beam weapons while playing through the campaign

Can it be done just by editing the text files, or is there software you need to use?

And if there is software, does it have a good tutorial?

Careful though.....if you mess with it too much you may accidentally mess up some of the craft....but you should be fine if you don't plan on adding new ships.
