windows- needs directplay to work
when I try playing this in windows 10 tp 10240, it asks to install directplay (for those using older versions of windows there are youttube videos on how to manually turn on directplay) so I go along with it and I get a error code 0x80071A90 telling that the function attempted to use a name reserved for use by another transaction. From what I have seen, older versions of windows have this built in and you just turn it on and you can play x-wing alliance. With windows 10, it downloads and tries to install directplay like you do when something needs .net franework 2.0 and 3.0 in win 8.1. What I would like to know will final release of windows either have or will allow installation of directplay. The only MS answer to the error code was either disable your antivirus to allow dp installation or install windows fresh.

to fix your problems in windows 10, download and install the june 2010 directx runtimes (you can get them from the MS download center), then when you run the game the next time, it will properly install directplay. (warning the game will start regardless if you restart windows or not, you need to restart windows 1st which means going to task manager and shut down x-wing alliance, then restart windows, you only have to shut down x-wing and restart once, not everytime you play) Now all i need is a proper joystick to play this, vector thrust and strike suit zero. Xb360 gamepads suck as they seperate turns and yaws onto the two thumbpads.

to fix, you go to programs and features in the control panel. Then at the far left of the screen in small type, left click on turn windows features on or off. Then from the window that appears left click on the plus box that has the words "legacy components" on it. From there, just check the checkbox for directplay. It will install directplay. Voila, instant x-wing alliance!

Thanks for your comments wheeljack12 I couldn't for the life of me figure out why a game that I had running from a CD install just a month ago would fail to run in steam.

I can't start the the game either, but i figured out that direct-play is installed on my system. I cannot start the game nevertheless.

I noticed that some star wars games that need directplay wont play in win 10. Directplay does work with older versions of windows.
