Alliance or Just regular X Wing
So I've been wanting to get one of these X Wing games for a while now. Rogue Squadron II on GameCube was just about my favorite game when I was little and I miss flying around. But I'm not sure which game to get... X Wing Alliance or the original X Wing? I'm sure to ya'll it would be a no brainer so any advice would be great. Thanks!

I haven't played the original Xwing since it came out for windows 95 or 98 (can't remember) I've been playing x-wing alliance for years now with the dsucp mod and would highy recommend it.
You can make customizable skirmishes in mulitplayer and play solo or with friends. I've never really played the single player missions on X-Wing Alliance.
But then again they are all on sale right now so why not pick up the pack !!

I have played X-Wing (DOS), X-Wing vs. Tie Figher and X-Wing Alliance. If you want to play the campaigns you should definitely do them all, however I would recommend them in order of newest to oldest. X-Wing Alliance, then X-Wing, then X-Wing vs. Tie Figher (they are successors of each other in that order in reverse, and they are probably increasing in difficulty the older it gets, so start with the easiest, XWA). Always I would recommend to use / learn how to use a Joystick with these Games!

The order of newest to oldest is NOT XWA, XW, XWVTF, TF, it's XWA, XWVTF, TF, XW. Only alliance works without flying through an steroid field of third party patches and file replacements.

Oops sorry, I somehow mistyped that. For XWA there are also third party patches that make the graphics quite acceptable even now. (At least the last time I tried it, also some years ago...). I guess X-Wing (DOS) might be easier to get running by using Dosbox than XvT, which was made for old Windows 95/98

Yea, this is the one to get. In my opinion the best Star Wars flight sim. It was the last of Lawrence Holland's series. A great role playing plot and only one from the series to have resolutions greater than 640*480 and also the only one to have full 360, roll left or right control.
Unfortunatly it was also the first to have issues with modern video cards and the disk version became unplayable for most without serious nerdly modifying of the DDraw file. Also those plot driven games had the added task of a lot of disk swapping. The Steam and GOG versions emliminate all the installation and graphics issues and truly make it plug and play again.
Warning though, it requires a joystick to even play. The game will not launch if one is not detected.

I still have and play them all. From the original X-wing to the new Battlefront, which is rather good but X-wing Alliance takes the cake for me as greatest Star Wars flight sim ever.

I would say that Alliance suffers from poor mission design in a lot of areas. I'm around halfway through it and there have been 3 missions so far that really tried my patience. It's a great game, but if you're having trouble don't hesitate to look up a guide... youtube has really helped a lot.
Did they patch XWA's Steam release so you can mod it now?
When X-Wing series was released on Steam last year this was not the case.
However the GOG version is moddable.

Yep, the mission design feels like a huge step backwards compared to Tie Fighter.

I'ved played them all. XvT is my favourite but depends what you are looking for. The original X-wing has best single player but is very dated even if you go with the 98 remaster. (I mean come on, 20 years is 20 years).
