Install XWA and launch it to test it works and create the initial proton prefix. I didn't pick any specific proton version. Left it on default (8.2?).
From the terminal (obvs change to the correct path for your Steam installation):
WINEPREFIX=%PATH_TO_STEAM_LIBRARY%/steam/steamapps/compatdata/361670/ winetricks dotnet48 (for me protontricks always fails installing dotnet so used winetricks)
WINEPREFIX=%PATH_TO_STEAM_LIBRARY%/steam/steamapps/compatdata/361670/ winetricks
override dinput ddraw to native, builtin
Install a DLL -> install latest dxvk
Copy XWAU executables in to steamapps XWA game dir
Run wine uninstaller gui
Install XWAU2020.exe
Install XWA Mega Update 5
Install XWA latest mp 5.x
Run xwahacker-qt and set required resolution (protontricks should kick in to ask which prefix to launch it under if you run it from desktop file manager). Deck resolution = 1280 x 800
Compress the game files and scp them over to deck and replace existing deck game files.
Compress the proton prefix (.../compatdata/361670) and scp that over to deck as well. again replacing existing.
Launch on Deck. Will maybe go through first time run (directx install, etc) but for me at least, it worked after that.
Give it a go. Hopefully will work for you as well.

You will need to install Lutris and launch the installers in Desktop Mode.
Doesn't work anymore, lmao
