The solution is to install vJoy/UJR, and create a 4-axis virtual joystick where your preferred pitch, yaw, roll axes are mapped to X, Y and rZ, and throttle to Z (or leaving Z unmapped if you don't own a throttle controller).
That said, having yaw on Y fits perfectly with the arcade feel of the Star Wars space fighter games. You'll be spending most of your time trying to get a clear shot at something that moves around you quickly, roll being a secondary control you might sometimes want for comfort, pretty much. This ain't no flight sim (or ANY kind of sim really), no balanced turns in Star Wars, and the Elite control scheme will likely get you killed. :)
