Sounds in Windows 10 - looping sound problem
I updated my Windows from 7 to 10.

Now in the X-Wing Alliance the sound system is a bit strange. There is an annoying, jamming/beating sound constantly in the background. It seems to me that music is replaced with it. In sound settings you can not disable it or change it to another sounds. However, speech instructions work ok, there is just this annoying background 'loop' constantly.

Any solutions to disable this looping, annoying noise?

Thanks in advance.

Running this game in Win10, I was hearing the in-game music, but no sound effects. Thanks to Fortunerunner's tip about running the game in Win 98 compatibility mode, I got the sound working properly.

So here's how I did that:

1. Navigate to where Steam has installed your games. I use a different drive for my Steam games, but if you just load games into C: you can find the folder by right-clicking your Steam icon and selecting "Open File Location".

2. Look for the folder steamapps > common > Star Wars X-Wing Alliance in that Steam game folder.

3. Right-click on the file "alliance.exe" and select "Properties".

4. In the Properties panel, click on the "Compatibility" tab. Under "Compatibility mode", click the box labeled "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and choose Windows 98/Me.

5. Try running the game from Steam.

6. If you get a crash (like I did, some Direct 3D error) go back to the Compatibility tab and click the button "Run compatibility troubleshooter". It'll do some schtuff.

7. When the troubleshooter program is done, it'll ask you to test the program. I did, and it ran perfectly, sound was working. So I closed the program and clicked the troubleshooter option that said "that fixed my problem".

Anyway, hope that is helpful for people.

Hope this helps.
