Xbox One Controller sucks
I can't even move with the Xbox One controller aside from switching throttles. Does anybody know the button configurations for this game or am I better off getting a Thrustmaster joystick for games like this?

Thank you!

Will a stick like this work on this game and modern games?

Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS X Joystick - PC and PlayStation 3 (2960703)

I cannot say with absolute certainty; I've never used that stick. It is a similar brand and may have similar quality, but i cannot argue for it's use for XWA.

Know that, at least in my 'expert' opinion, that a throttle control module is not neccesary. In my more subjective opinion, the arguement of immersion cannot be neccesarily argued for it either, as a lone joystick more resembles the in-game(canon of vehicle) joystick. Anyway, the thottle control on the lone stick works and feels great.

Something else i cannot say with certainly, is having anything with windows 10 involved. I play this another windows version, and works great.

A HOTAS is not reccomended unless you really into flight sims. Like, you want to play Microsoft Flight Simulator or X-Plane and actually want to learn how to fly. For arcadey-games, it might not be worth it if you don't have that much money to spare.

You might want a cheaper stick that has a slider for throttle.

In all honesty, for this game, a HOTAS is overkill and unnecessary (and I'm flying with an HOTAS). It was designed with one hand on the joystick and the other hand on the keyboard. This game was before HOTAS.

You may also want to look into just fiddling with the Xbox One gamepad, maybe use xpadder or something, to make it work better for your game. From what it sounds like, it is detecting the wrong axis for controls, something an interpreter might fix. It is kind of odd, because the game is DirectInput only and I thought the XboxOne gamepad was all Xinput.

Well, I've already bought a $60 PC compatible HOTAS flight stick as I want to get into flight simulation games. It's a T.Flight HOTAS X and I'm playing around with it as we speak.

I wouldn't recommend an xbox gamepad for a flight sim like this, at all, whether on functionality or immersion. This isn't pure arcade either, there's some sim elements to it, in context of sw. Joysticks, and especially the one i recommended, is the way to go and not overkill at all ;)

For actual flight sims, i recommend way way more than the joystick i mentioned. Some rigs can cost in the hundreds, but damn they're worth it if you truly want to get into real flight sims. I think Zix is undervaluing joysticks and especially sim rigs a bit here, and overvaluing the xbox controller...by alot

for a flight sim rig that'll blow your socks off for its value - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ssDtCOiWaU

VirtualFly TQ6 Throttle + Yoke

but again, i'd only look into a rig like that for actual flight sim, and not recommend a hotas for that

I love flight sims and I love my X52 HOTAS (and I've fiddled with it enough to play XWA with it with minimal keyboard input, and I play M-FXS). And I admit that I haven't tried playing X Wing Alliance with a 360 controller (which I also have).

The issue is cost. If this is the only flight-sim they're playing or just trying out, a HOTAS might not be worth it. Keep in mind that there are many arcadey flight games, like Ace Combat.

But if they're interested in flight sims and don't mind the cost, then yes, a HOTAS is both reccomended and necessary for flight sims.

My point about XWA and HOTAS was not aimed that it would be bad, but that really, the game existed before HOTAS was widespread. They really imagined the player using their mouse-hand on the joystick and the other hand on the keyboard (with a keyboard reference card). It was made in 1999 and the first HOTAS was around 2002 or so. You CAN configure a HOTAS To work with it, I have, it's just that you will still need to use the keyboard for certain actions from time to time like docking or picking things up.

Congrats on your new HOTAS and welcome to the hobby.

Outside of WXA, I also reccomend that you look into Freespace 2 (spiritual successor to XWA) and Microsoft Flight Simulator X. FSX is old (and cheaper than X-plane), but still good that has beginner missions (there is also Wiley's book that I'm reading for more about flying).

Odd, I did not need to change any configuration settings with my Xbox One controller.

By default the left thumbstick controls pitch and yaw, "A" fire the current weapon and "B" targets the closest object to the reticle.

The left trigger acts as a brake, taking the throttle from 50% down to 0% when fully pressed, while the right trigger increases throttle from 50% to 100%. Pulling both triggers simultaneously resets the throttle to 50%.

You will need to go into settings to bind controls to the other buttons. I have mine set up to roughly match the controls for Ace Combat 6/7.

I prefer the X1 controller to my two button joystick.
